I don't know the Abyssea expansion in XI anyway, why not explain it in greater detail? Images? Images always helps learning XD.
It's hard to explain why there is such a love/hate with it.

Basically, Abyssea was a series of 10 zones introduced in three content patches that we paid $10 each for, making the mini expansion $30 total. Abyssea itself was a parallel world to Vana'diel, with the same zones, but with slightly different rules. In Abyssea, your player character died trying to stop the apocalypse (the plot of the 2nd expansion, CoP) and lost - so in Abyssea, the world really has ended. The planet is overrun with what we now call Voidsent. One of the survivors, Joachim, managed to break into our timeline/universe and recruit adventurers to do their best to stop the voidsent invasion. Not quite as wibbly wobbly timey wimey as the 4th expansion, Wings of the Goddess, but the best moment in Abyssea was when Abyssea-Prishe meets your player character after Abyssea-You was dead for a few years. Very touching.

Abyssea's storyline content was pretty thin, and because it was introduced with the raised level caps, it obliterated the need for any content before it. The cheap level 78 gear was better than almost everything at level 75 that had been best in slot for half a decade. Unfortunately, they didn't introduce any real challenging content in Abyssea until the 2nd infusion of zones, when the Empyrean base gear was introduced. By the time the third patch came along, Abyssea was actually kind of fun and had some genuinely challenging battles (the aforementioned caturae and Shinryu fights) - but the damage was done, and the population of FFXI had dropped in half because people were upset about all the changes in game balance.

TLDR: - Abyssea's implementation caused too many changes at once, too fast, and "ruined" the game for a lot of people.
