Just Hit Fifty! Now What?

Today, I hit a personal milestone. Kacho got his white mage robes! I'm so happy!

I plan on continuing with the main story quests but how do I go about gearing up intelligently so my lalafell healer is ready for the healing challenges ahead?

I look at the Mor Dhona vendors and they all require currency that I am not sure how to earn. Gil I understand but poetics and tomestones confuse me. So what do I do from here?

You can buy ilvl115 gear from vendors in ishgard. Also the main story quests and sidequests in heavensward areas will give you level appropriate gear as well. I wouldn't worry too much about getting poetics gear as it will be replaced fairly quickly anyway.

First, Congrats on 50!

Ishgard only unlocks after you complete the ARR quest line. It's impossible to enter the city without it.

OP can still buy the equipment from marketboards and the like, but it can get expensive. For the time being, refer to this list: xivdb for healing items WHM can use.

You will essentially be obtaining those items from lv.50 dungeons you unlock.

Tomes of Poetry are an endgame currency and earned by unlocking and running optional level 50 dungeons. Here is a list for you to reference, along with the specific quests that unlock them.

Any of the Raids (crystal tower, and coil of bahamut) will give you weapons/armor as well along with tokens, so those should be valuable to you. Prioritize a weapon upgrade (as that will directly increase your healing power). If you have problems with MP, get better armor and accessories. Otherwise, you can probably squeak by with what you have now until the main story quest gives you i115.

As you've seen though, you need to earn Tomes of Poetics (a token currency at endgame) for the high-end gear. Dungeons will give you Tomes of Poetics you can turn in for i120 weapons and armor in Revenant's Toll (Mor Dhona). It's not strictly necessary, as i120 will be good until level 52 (i130 will not be easily replaced until level 55). If you want, save enough poetics for the i120 weapon and that should be good enough.

One thing to note: As a Healer a weapon upgrade is not quite as essential as it would be for Tank/DPS, and your i90 armor will be good enough until Ishgard, at which point you'll be getting upgrades from quests/can buy from the stores. The lvl 53 dungeon drops 130 gear, so if you do have any Poetic gear on and upgraded that will be the last dungeon you'll get thats at level with you.

ALSO, make sure to talk to Urianger in the Walking Sands after completing Praetorium if you haven't already. He has three trials you have to beat in order to move on to Ishgard as well.

Just continue doing the main story quests, they now give the gears and weapons you need for each patch contents (2.1 quests give ilvl 70, 2.2 ilvl 90, 2.3-2.5 ilvl 110) and till you finish them all and get to ishgard the new quest starts give out i115 HQ. If you follow the MSQ, there is no need to buy gears at all.

First of all make sure you have swiftcast from levelling thaumaturge To lvl 26. As for gear, continue the main story and you will eventually end up with a nice set of i120 gear towards the end.

You're in that it's not as essential. But it's still essential. Especially from a solo standpoint.
