Unfortunately, there is no option to lock onto a target without subsequently back pedaling. When I used a controller, I rebound the lock-on key to R3, which allowed me to easily cancel target while moving. Another possibly option, though not one I have tried myself, would be to rebind the Target Nearest to Farther and Target Farther to Nearest keys to two different buttons on your controller. This will make targeting somewhat smoother as you won't have to cycle through enemies with the soft targeting.
It's best to get used to strafing instead of relying too heavily on lock-on. What should also help is to make sure "Automatically face target when using action" is checked on. You can find this under Character config --> Target.
1 tip is if you hold L1 and use the up and down arrows you can scroll through the enemy list
As for strafing while locked on, I do not know if there is a way to fix that, but there isnt really any reason to lock onto an enemy in the first place, and it can actually be a detriment in some cases. It is not like Dissidia where they will be going all over the place. It is really better for you to get used to manually controlling the camera (zoom in and out is L1+right stick up or down btw). If you insist on using lock on though I dont know if I can really help
i think lock-on is only usefull for meeles. so while you move around the enemy for your positionals every auto attack hits in time. if you don't face the enemy you can't use auto attack, so you will lose a tiny amount of damage without lock-on while moving for positionals.
i have removed the lock-on from my gamepad >.>
oh btw you can target with R2+L1. very easy to use. just hold R2 and then use L1 for circle through the enemys.

Agree with this! Targeting became SO SO much easier once I started using R2/L1, especially while stance-dancing as a healer and using up and down to target party members. Lock is a real pain because it can make it difficult to see the entire area as well. I find I don't need to strafe just by using the camera creatively but some people prefer it.
