I don't think you get why many people prefer pay to play MMOs over free to play MMOs. It isn't because a monthly sub MMO is suppose to ensure that EVERYTHING is included in that and nothing in a cash shop. It's to ensure there's no pay to win items in a cash shop. That mount is not pay to win, nor is anything else in the cash shop of FFXIV, so SE is in no way obligated to include it with the monthly sub. Most free to play MMOs will actually have items in the shop that effect gameplay. Yeah, I get that you prefer everything to be included in the sub cost, as I'm sure all of us wish it was, but you made it sound like you are surprised that a non-pay to win item is in a cash shop in a sub-based MMO.

I pay $170 a month for TV and Internet.. But I still have to pay $5 or whatever for a pay per view movie. (which I don't, but the point is still the same.. Monthly sub doesn't include "optional" items)

Playing the game is simply optional too and that's where the problem lies with that wonderful word. It can be applied to anything within the game and the only difference between whether you agree with me or not will simply come down to where your tolerance for these optional services ends.

They could rent retainers. Doesn't matter as you can still do business without any in shout and party finder.
They could start selling 500% exp pots. Doesn't matter as you can still level the normal way and give yourself a pat on the back for doing it the way it was meant to be done.
They could start selling max level crafting. Doesn't matter since you'll get the feel of how crafting works while leveling up normally.
They could sell you a handy zodiac weapon package that can skip the previous steps of the relic weapon quests so you can enjoy the current step at it's best.
They could start selling sets that were tuned to meet dps checks. Doesn't matter since it's merely giving your group the peace of mind that they don't have to farm dungeons daily in order to experience their raid content as it was meant to be. For those that don't want to pay then you can simply pay with time by grinding

In the end they can sell all these things. Yes, there will be backlash if they did but it still very much keeps up with the optional theme that they've taken. Which is why it bothers me when people just point to the OPTIONAL word in their marketing and tell us that nothing could possibly go wrong because the marketing department told us it wouldn't.

Personally I think if they do start adding in 4-man hard dungeons/raids, they should make Castrum and Prae the first ones. Have Livia, Nero, and Gaius armors be rewards for it, both the White Devil and Red Baron mounts be VERY RARE drops, meaning you can still get it or just buy it now and not have to deal with RNG.

Also a little Ultima Weapon minion, for funs.
