Openly gay characters in ff14

I'd say he might be Bisexual, but in a similar way Haurchefant is - they're Warrior of Light-sexual rather than actively being interested in the same sex.

No, I can confirm it a "Brother in Arms" speach pattern. More teasing about who was showing off and "I could have done that/better if" kinda comments. Where as Minfilia definitely has dialog that could be romantically interpreted with Male PCs, no confirmation on female.

But unlike Lord H, Thancred doesn't openly hit on Male PCs, teasingly or otherwise.

She says that to guys, too, minus the "bet you didn't think I swung that way" addition. Most "gay" dialogue in FFXIV, alas, falls into the "girl-on-girl is hot" variety of fetishized lesbianism and tends to occur only when female NPCs would be hitting on the PC regardless of sex. Aside from Haurchefant's general flamboyance, the only male NPC to hit on the PC that I can recall off the top of my head (only play a guy, so this is just from what I've heard) is Thancred, and in those rare instances he has different lines with male PCs. No bi guys here.

I'm also terribly bored of the 'skirt chasing rogue' trope. I'd find Thancred a lot more interesting if he showed an active interest in both genders or we encountered someone similar who did the same thing.

I think the fact that F'lahamine shot him down every time he hit on her for 15 years was kind of amusing. Though I think Thancred and the Doman girl (the bar keep woman that worked with F'lahamine whom I can't recall the name) have a legitimate shipping between them.

I always assumed the Carpenter's Guildmaster was gay. He is very sensitive to the needs of that one Gridanian soldier(and the feeling seems reciprocated), and I kinda thought they were lovers, though I don't think it is actively pointed out in-game.

I think Beatin and Gairhard were childhood sweethearts that are still carrying around a lot of complicated feelings for each other, Beatin also mentions the relationship in the Siblings and Sidewhiskers mail moogle quest and certainly frames it like it was a very messy break-up. Mind, he's implied to be romantically attracted to the dance mistress in the Harvest Dance quest so he's probably bisexual rather than gay and also his emotional life is an ongoing disaster.

Also among the U in forgotten springs is a gate guard who comments about the way U'lamana makes her tail curl in a way that very few others do, she is either a lesbian or bi, as U'lamana is female.

Loonh Gah is tsundere to both genders..lol..

First off, freaking amazing community to be discussing this stuff without insults or shaming. <3 you all.

For the dev team, here's the appeal for LGBT characters: growing up, there are very very few LGBT heroes in any video game to look up to. Even in media up until the past 15 years, they've been entirely supporting roles with no real significance to overall story lines. They're frequently passing thoughts hidden in the story. I think that's what's meant by "openly" gay. There's hints, there's subtleties, but they're not major and you have to read between the lines. On the *other* hand, I'd hate for something like this to be a spectacle. My personal thoughts? Make Thancred bisexual. He's flirted with enough girls to get info, why not have him flirt with a male soldier in a cutscene to get info out of him? It fits his personality perfectly to do so.

Hmm, while I agree with the idea in principle, I dislike the idea of altering Thancred's sexuality for very much the same reason I dislike the idea of someone trying to alter my sexuality. For Thancred, at least, I'm pretty sure that plane has sailed. For other major characters going forward, however, either those currently left undefined or simply characters who have yet to be introduced, I think the devs could find the viewpoints here useful for characterization.

(Still won't change my headcanon that a certain redhead chose eternal stasis out of despair that his growing attraction to a certain roguish blond Seeker would keep him from fulfilling the "duty" of continuing his family's bloodline.)

It doesn't need to be Thancred. Just some other major character that is liable to stick around. Someone who isn't an obvious stereotype - and ideally someone who doesn't just become that way as a consequence of fan 'shipping'. I'd also like for them to be classically handsome and conventionally attractive.
