Having trouble with getting my relic from zenith to atma

Relic Weapon Zenith Enhancement? that is the option to go to atma.

I'm pretty sure you have to equip the relevant relic weapon first in order to actually get Jalzhan to accept the atma

No, because you need to turn the weapon in to him, and cannot if it's equipped.

This threw me off. I expected the quests to name them based on what we were upgrading to instead of what we were upgrading from. I don't remember exactly what Jalzahn said, but the OP's description of "told that my weapon needs to be an atma weapon" sounds like what I first got as well, when selecting the wrong quest, the one which is actually about how to upgrade atma to animus.
