Having trouble with getting my relic from zenith to atma

I have all 12 atma (one of each in my inventory) zenith weapon is not equipped. I must have spoken to Gerolt at some point 'cause he asks if I'm keeping Jalzahn busy. But when I talk to Jalzahn (with any of my classes that are over 50 that I have the zenith for) I'm just told that my weapon needs to be an atma weapon. No idea if there's a missing step or something, I've been checking walkthroughs, I'm stuck.

I'm pretty sure you have to equip the relevant relic weapon first in order to actually get Jalzhan to accept the atma, like most of the relic quest it doesn't work if you have another weapon equipped in it's place.

I should have said that I've tried with and without my relic equipped. Also, many of the places I've looked tell me to have it unequipped.

Relic Weapon Zenith Enhancement? that is the option to go to atma.

No, because you need to turn the weapon in to him, and cannot if it's equipped.

This threw me off. I expected the quests to name them based on what we were upgrading to instead of what we were upgrading from. I don't remember exactly what Jalzahn said, but the OP's description of "told that my weapon needs to be an atma weapon" sounds like what I first got as well, when selecting the wrong quest, the one which is actually about how to upgrade atma to animus.

you are welcome. i know others have gotten confused. there is some that i still ask on if i do not understand. glad it worked.
