Since I'm a couple of days shy of my fourth month of play, I thought I'd share my hints about the friend code stuff. ^-^

Save the 10 Silver Chocobo Feathers for level 60 and get the item level 230 gear at the Calamity Salvager. That saves a good chunk of farming Allagan Tomestones of Lore when the main story requires an item level that I couldn't reach otherwise. This stuff is available for Silver Chocobo Feathers since the last patch and I nearly didn't see it.

The Circlet of Friendship in my opinion really shines when you level secondary classes - combine with the Brand New Ring (reward for completing the Novice Training at the Smiths) and some cheap food for more xp. If you can get your Free Company to put on Heat of the Battle, all the better.
