I don't get why people are miffed about the whole elemental aspect of the game. Let's say BLM had access to all elements, and the game follows the 'normal' elemental wheel of resistance. SE then really has 3 options...

1) Give each element unique spells, that all ultimately produce the same end DPS when used correctly against the element they're strong against. SE is now not only balancing BLM against all other DPS, but also balancing BLM with 6 versions of itself all of which will need be equal or it'll break it when balancing it with other jobs.

2) Give BLM access to multiple versions of the same spell, just with a different animation and affinity. Skill bloat for no reason, dev time unnecessarily devoted to creating 6 versions of the same skill'.

3) Not make each element balanced in respect to each other. What happens when a boss is weak to your lowest damage element? What if your lowest damage element is SMNs strongest? You'd probably opt to bring the SMN, or vice versa. Again. Balance is now out of whack.
