Spoilers:
Maybe because Moenbryda was a boring and forced in character and we have very little reason to care for her.
But for preexisting NPCs, it wouldn't work. What if they die, or go missing? They'd have to write in new ways to refer to you in the MSQ for each and every character, with other complications. Now your retainer or new characters developed for the sole purpose of this romantic thing would work, but... "waste of development time", especially when we have the Eorzean version of marriage.
Well, I already was forced to kill my Waifu to be.
It'd be a fun mission bringing her back from the dead.
You poor soul. I know what it feels like when you're forced to kill your waifu.
But seriously, I feel like my character has like no connection with anyone. That one scene in "The Vault" had to be the most emotional thing my character has done. Why can't we have more scenes where there's a connection between two people being established.

I have this feeling if they did impliment something like this we would end up with something similar to the favour system and this below.
"while I can't marry you myself here use this scroll to summon my alter ego and marry her/him"
Romance? I'm not sure. But I would love to see NPC relationship quests and rewards. Rewards as in an extra cut in a cutscene with a few lines of text, an extra mention of something during a (de)briefing, and mostly - glimpses into the background of those NPCs, things about their pasts, about their families/friends/etc....... things like that. This is a roleplaying game, after all, but even the "i'm the hero who saves the world!" immersion is broken time and time again by the passive mute nature of our own PCs, what gives?? Give those characters we've been together with for ages some depth pls. Give our contact with them some depth.
I'm pining for Ser Zephirin, but I'm doomed to kill him over and over and over again along with his 11 bros and jerk of a king.
Sorry Haurchefant, but I answered to Aymeric's inquiry to avenge you with a "...". D: You're forever my bro, but your killer is a cutie.
