Who says I've ever had 10 million gil? I've not. I started playing this game in Janurary of this year and I've done 7 and a half crafters. This costs gil.
Doesn't have to cost gil. I was poor once. I leveled my crafts by initially gathering shards myself, gathering every damn mats myself, and leveling gatherer classes at the same time. By the time I had a few at 35, I was able to make 20-50k a day, enough to finance the others level faster by leves. Then they all hit 50. I made the i55 sets after a month or two of playing, and max-melded them after some more time, maybe one set a week (that was incremental, since my income was not even 200k/day in early 2.1).

Buying armor costs gil or it used to.
Craft it or farm the dungeon, or skip to lv 45 using any means and get the free head, hand, feet and legs pieces your lv 45 quest gives. I never bought the NPC or market board armors. I either just winged it with dungeon drops, or made items, up to lv 30 (I was a bit undergeared between 35 and 45 I guess).

Never ever had chance in this game to save gil because there's always something I need.
#1 rule of making money: you need money to make money. So NEVER go below a certain limit you set for yourself that lets you buy materials or absorb a loss. Early on I set that limit at 100k, then 1 million, 2 million when I was saving for FC house in 2.2. Now 10 million.

Suppose none of it matters anymore seeing as my crafting is now pointless thanks to ventures.
Some crafts are. Some items are. Make items with high demand, even if you compete with retainer people you'll make a buck. Try making the ishgardian muffins, its about 1k cost in mats for possibly selling 12k if HQ. 8k at lowest (even if someone undercuts below 8k, let them, and wait).

And I literally don't have the money to level up another craft and therefore don't have the stats to make this new vanity.
Crafts make money. They only cost money to gear ideally (ie using max melds), the cost of gear itself should be marginal (1 million for a i150 set should be easy to get for a lv 60 crafter making sub-50 stuff).

Summoner first, Scholar second...but mainly crafter.
