
Just know that you can be in combat if a party member is also in combat. However, you will not appear on the enemy list until either you or an opponent has made a "move" on each other (weapon skill, magic, status, etc).You only appear on the map if you are engaged in combat and a short while after before you disappear off radar again. It has nothing to do with whether or not you are visually seen by other players. Also the nin pvp ability malmsight can mark opponents on the mini map in their vicinity. And of course battle high/fever players are shown on mini map as well unless its a nin using hide.
