Do you think square enix will continue making new MMOs after this project?

I'd have to say that, as far as MMOs go, WoW is the exceptional outlier. And as for Blizzard, WoW's staff alone is massive. I'm willing to wager that it's several times larger than the staff that works on XIV and XI combined.

I don't know how financially well off SE is to consider adding another MMO developing staff. Right now, I'm leaning on that while they are doing fairly well right now, they're in no state to do such a thing.

It's kind of early, but if they do decide that. I hope they they give it the FFXV battle system. It's not over the top in a way of kingdom hearts, but it is something that could work in a mmo.

I prefer to see another SE fanchise get a MMORPG, but yeah if the game keeps being this good (for SE pockets) then yeah, I reckon we might see a new type of FF MMO in 9-10 years.

SE already has 3 active MMO titles on the market

So they already aren't staying with just one MMO project currently, and 2 out of 3 of those games are Final Fantasy titles.

They also had a fourth MMORPG as well - Front Mission Online, but it was shutdown ages ago. And that also doesn't include Fantasy Earth Zero which SE developed on behalf of another publisher (which they then relinquished all control over), but that too was shut down, so I guess that doesn't really count.

Theres a private server for Fantasy Earth Zero now if you still wanna play it. Anyways I can see another MMO being released at some point. Even with years of MMO expirience, ff14 managed to have a rocky start at 1.0, a fun pace at 2.0, and a bit of slow cruise in 3.0. (in contrast to FFXI its still pretty darn good) THough I'm not completely sure the world is as it should be and maybe Yoshi sees it that way too, like all the instances and such. Before a new MMO comes out I'm sure one MMO would be pushed aside at some point or some devs moved to a new project, hopefully being a new and improved FF MMO. i would think, with the older style of mmos going out (not the p2p mode, thats doing just fine) squre would in the future do a more modern style mmo. with live action combat so to speak. they have the ability. and im fairly sure theyd get a VERY large crowd. and they DEFINITEly would not go f2p lol. for multiple reasons. one, as the history shows. pay to play, while, as the name states, requires payment, in the end, lasts longer, and is a far better investment. more free to play mmos have shut down, then ANY of the mmos that have used the p2p model. it wont happen soon, as ffxiv is still a very large source of income or them, but, it will likely happen.

The fact that FF14ARR hasn't won any type of award since it has been out compared to XI I can see SE closing the servers down in 6 years time and during that time they will start working on the next MMORPG for the Japanese market which will then come out in the western side of the world. This game will not last as long as 11 did.

The problem mmos have now is there 2 short term and the development /progression isn't lasting or rewarding. What you do this patch means nothing In the next one. The gear you get today is junk tomorrow. All of that stuff.

Yoshi said in a recent article there aren't many new mmos coming out these days and that's because research says players aren't interested any more. They'll pick up an mmo blast it for a couple of months and drop it. The current generation of mmos lacks longevity and meaningful progression and thus doesn't keep players interested.

You can see it with 14. It's done well with sales but sucks in player retention.

Compare it to xi for example. Which had about 2.5 million sales but kept a sustained player base of about 500 thousand active players for a good number of years.

Xiv 14 has what 7-8 million sales and recent figures suggest maybe 300k active players.

Players just don't stick around in mmos anymore because there's no longevity to them. Even the biggest one wow. Ppl drop there subs for a year. Come back blast the new stuff for a month or 2 and drop there subs for the rest of the year... no longevity at all.

And it's part of why developers aren't interested in making new mmos.
