Well, understandably, noone had problems with men dressing as women back then. Happened all the time though the names of dress were wide and varied ("It's not a dress, these are my robes!"). Further, actors often portrayed women in theater because women weren't allowed to do much of anything... The problems arose only when women wanted to do anything that wasn't deemed 'appropriate for a woman'. It's what cost Joan d'Arc her life despite everything she'd done for France.
