As for your FFXI comparison, the PS2 was released a mere 2 years before FFXI, it was rather new and had relatively powerful hardware at the time. FFXIV came out 6-7 years after the PS3, where it was an already incredibly outdated system, the difference is quite clear.

Edit: Unless you mean the promise that 1.0 would arrive on consoles, in which Yoshida wasn't in charge, or even on the development team until late into 1.0's cycle, no? He did eventually fulfill that promise with 2.0 though.
