Even in RL, companies make stuff such as limited edition figures or cards, that is limited in number and only sold during a certain period until sold out.
It adds real life $ value to them, and that attracts collectors who want to eventually resell the item. The only way you could do that with FF14 would be to sell your account, and that's not legal.
