I don't care so much about the item itself, but rather the event experience. People take part in the events, they talk about them, some events bring about social interactions that would otherwise be left untouched, they have special aesthetics, NPC's and dialogue, festive consumables, and at the end of it all, you get exclusive gear. What's more compelling to a new player when they ask about that exclusive item? When you tell them about the event you participated in to get it, what you enjoyed about it, maybe what you didn't, when you saw someone make a fool of themselves trying to do X, and the festivities that got you that gear, or, "It's an item in the cash shop, buy it." The new player should see events as something to look forward to to obtain exclusive gear, not a passing event to grab a piece of gear for free before SE starts charging for it.

But this enforces your own personal experience onto others. Your enjoyment of the event is not diminished because I had to purchase the content via Mogstation. While I may well fancy partaking in it myself, I appreciate they aren't going to necessarily rerun old content. It would be nice if they did, but c'est la vie. Instead, new players are left with being unable to get the items or participate in the event. At least making them purchasable is meeting somewhere in the middle.

I don't see the need to meet in the middle. You participate in the event and get a reward, or you don't.

Exactly. C'est la vie indeed. You couldn't get the item, big deal you missed your chance and get over it. Nah, actually creating thread after thread of whining is what actually happens.

Considering you asked "what's more compelling to a new player " earlier, I find this line of reason rather contradictory. New players aren't going to give one iota about your experiences in an event once they find out they can't get the items or do the event themselves. So, in essence, your experiences for other players are completely meaningless.

SE needs to go back to letting players purchase old event gear from NPC when the event comes up again (Moonfaire, xmas, halloween, etc). Pulling items from the game to sell it on the Mog Station is balls.

This wouldn't help you for things like lightning hair and the moogle outfit, but seriously, this is an MMO. Some items are just going to be exclusive, or one-time only, because that is the nature of MMOs.
How is it a horrible idea? People want the items, but missed the event. Thus, they make them purchasable for those willing. Asking most just be made available via gil would diminish the event somewhat.

I don't think cash shops have any place in a subscription game (outside of character services - fantasias, world transfer, name change, etc).

This is a game that we had to purchase to play, and we pay a monthly subscription to continue playing. It's double-dipping with your paying customers. Cash shops should be left to F2P and B2P games.

So now we have people practically begging SE to release more and more items to their cash shop instead of making them available via in-game methods. How many more "exclusive" items do you want them develop for their cash shop versus putting them into the actual game?

This differs from F2P/B2P because every item thus far is exclusive for vanity. Provided they keep that model, I have no real issues with the Cash Shop because I'm technically not missing anything relevant. The fact they mostly just toss old event items on there only makes it easier to accept.

As for our subscription fees. Those pay for the assortment of continuous content we are given. Unlike say, WoW, we get patch updates fairly quickly. They make plenty of gear you can get in-game. Frankly, most of it is better than anything on the Cash Shop. So I don't see it as a big deal.

It's part of the event experience. You take part in a limited time event, and part of that event is an exclusive reward, and a fun conversation piece. If not, look forward to the next one.

That is just plain silly. If you actually feel slighted event items did not remain exclusive, then I question what exactly you're placing value in. Put simply, those fun conversations won't be shared with newer players, because they aren't going to care about your experiences. I, for one, wouldn't want to hear about your experiences after discovering I can't partake in them for myself. That would only make me want them more. So, you'll get a "oh, coolio." or "that's nice" from me, and nothing else.

If this were accessible in-game, but only after a difficult grind or challenging boss, then I would love to hear about it because I can resolve to put in that same level of commitment. A fifteen minute quest lacks the same reverence.

Well isn't that exactly it? Limited time events aren't indefinitely available. You take part in them while they're around and have experiences of your own, to share with those that listen, and get your own exclusive pieces. If my experiences make you want an item more, you'll pay attention when an exclusive event comes around that gets you really excited. You'll want the chance for your own pieces, and you deserve every one that comes your way in that event.

I'd much rather see events repeated so players can actually experience the event for themselves, but it just devolves into a cycle of players that missed the event, and players that hit the event when it came around.
