I don't see the need to meet in the middle. You participate in the event and get a reward, or you don't.But this enforces your own personal experience onto others. Your enjoyment of the event is not diminished because I had to purchase the content via Mogstation. While I may well fancy partaking in it myself, I appreciate they aren't going to necessarily rerun old content. It would be nice if they did, but c'est la vie. Instead, new players are left with being unable to get the items or participate in the event. At least making them purchasable is meeting somewhere in the middle.

Exactly. C'est la vie indeed. You couldn't get the item, big deal you missed your chance and get over it. Nah, actually creating thread after thread of whining is what actually happens.

Considering you asked "what's more compelling to a new player " earlier, I find this line of reason rather contradictory. New players aren't going to give one iota about your experiences in an event once they find out they can't get the items or do the event themselves. So, in essence, your experiences for other players are completely meaningless.
How is it a horrible idea? People want the items, but missed the event. Thus, they make them purchasable for those willing. Asking most just be made available via gil would diminish the event somewhat. That is a horrible idea.
SE needs to go back to letting players purchase old event gear from NPC when the event comes up again (Moonfaire, xmas, halloween, etc). Pulling items from the game to sell it on the Mog Station is balls.
This wouldn't help you for things like lightning hair and the moogle outfit, but seriously, this is an MMO. Some items are just going to be exclusive, or one-time only, because that is the nature of MMOs.

I don't think cash shops have any place in a subscription game (outside of character services - fantasias, world transfer, name change, etc).
This is a game that we had to purchase to play, and we pay a monthly subscription to continue playing. It's double-dipping with your paying customers. Cash shops should be left to F2P and B2P games.
So now we have people practically begging SE to release more and more items to their cash shop instead of making them available via in-game methods. How many more "exclusive" items do you want them develop for their cash shop versus putting them into the actual game?
It's part of the event experience. You take part in a limited time event, and part of that event is an exclusive reward, and a fun conversation piece. If not, look forward to the next one.Considering you asked "what's more compelling to a new player " earlier, I find this line of reason rather contradictory. your actual memories of the event won't go away just because it was put in the cash shop, and if anything tell newer players that an event is coming up/is happening and if they don't do it then they will have to wait about a whole year in order to get the item again. item exclusivity never real stuck me as important. so you got a item form an event X amount of time ago. would it not be much better to have the exclusive item be the more difficult to obtain rather then locking it behind a gated time frame? for example the mount that drops in A4S. i really want this mount but i lack the desire to do savage. so i wont be getting it. and if anything its more of a exclusive trophy then the event items. it shows you completed really hard content and not the i that you have played when the event happens so its far more valuable since it shows your skills and dedication to getting hard core content. for the more casual there is gonnan be the relic which will be nerfed over a long period of time, but while it is still new if you do it a far as the progress lets you for that patch. that shows that you do indeed put a lot of work into the gam
Your exclusive item is so exclusive that thousand of players have it c:
As I have said in another thread similar, I don't really care if they bring back the old events but yet it doesn't matter cus then the people who join after or who were on break or whatever will come in and complain about missing the event yet again. Now I do admit, in a way it is kind of a reward or symbol for being dedicated enough to hit every event and I can see why some don't want them to come back, personally I'd just rather have new events rather than them just bringing it back and saying 'Well here is your event, if you did it, ah well"
