it's not the players fault nor responsibility to pay the fees related to them fixing the game that shouldn't have been released in such a horrible state. it's se's responsibility to get the game fixed and up to par. the good news is the review sites are going to have a field day with eating this news up.Uh, you realize according to the letter they have 250 employees working on this game? For a year? With no income and not much population growth to show for it?
Try starting a business and paying 250 employees for a year with no money coming in from the product and see how well you do.
Anyone that likes this game should be thankful they even care at this point. New graphics engine? New server structure? Redoing the world map? Doing all this (we asked for all of this by the way) while still providing monthly or bi-monthly regular content updates that add a respectable amount of content to the game? Any other company would have run out of money/investors pulling out by now.
I also question the timing of this, but did they kind of did launch the game a month and a half before Cataclysm. Also, 2.0 will take another year of development. Leave if you want, just give them props for being committed and trying to revive the game while dealing with all this incessant whining.

FFXIV defenders are out in force this morning.
1) Last I heard they are working on this for XI, (major outcry about the crysta system when PlayOnline->SE Account merges were announced) due to be done by the end of the year, so I don't see why they wouldn't extend it to XIV which runs on the same account system.I'm not too fussed about us being billed late nov-early dec. My main concern are two things (well, one is a concern, the other is more like a question):
1) can we have some more use friendly options of payment. Why not paypal, or direct debit or something we all can get on board with?
2) do we still get our 30days free trial when payment kicks off in nov-dec?

2) Don't think so, but there is going to be a limited trial reactivation period that was talked about when 2.0 launches in about a year from now.
Thanks for the response, will be keeping an eye on the payment system1) Last I heard they are working on this for XI, (major outcry about the crysta system when PlayOnline->SE Account merges were announced) due to be done by the end of the year, so I don't see why they wouldn't extend it to XIV which runs on the same account system.

Yes, we should be paying to play this game.
FF14 has been free to play for many months now, during this time there has been hundreads of employees on the payroll, taking resources from Square Enix instead of the money we are paying for the game. Keep in mind that the people being employeed to develop a game, in the majority are qualified professionals who are taking home a decent pay check.
Granted, we and lots of others have paid for the game or even the collectors edition and therefore we have put money into the company. However this is mainly paying those who created the game to begin with and is not providing the money for the new staff and therefore the game is sapping money out of SquareEnix.
Put yourself in the shoes of the board of directors in SquareEnix, they know that money is being sapped out of the company to fund a failed game, if no money comes out of the game then the game is useless to the company. If our subscriptions pay for some of the staffing then the game is likely to continue. If no funds are drawn from the customers, then all the company has to go off is the promise that the PS3 release and version will bring enough customers to make a profit.
Personally, I do not play this game much; however I will be subscribing. As a Software Engineer, I admire the companies stance on trying to remake the game and not to abondon their customers and fanbase. But from what I have seen in the improvements in the game and after seeing what promises have been fulfilled, I look forward to path towards version 2.0 and wish for the game's success.
Nothing is an incorrect choice of word.
this game is a liability to SE at this point, the investment into the game is in the hope that the game becomes an asset in the future, much like purchasing penny stocks.

would be nice if we at least tried 2.0 before paying subs, if no then probably i wont pay unless i see a review from gamespot/metacritic etc.
