Screen Flashing Glitch

Hello! I recently picked up FF14 3 days ago (at the time of this post), eager to play it on my brand new budget build PC (which was still a huge step up from my last machine.)

The game runs perfectly on Maximum settings (so far in my gameplay experience.) I've been averaging about 10-14 hours a day (Work closed for the week.. Yay/Boo!) and I've noticed that during my gaming sessions all 3 days I've played I've had one occurrence per day of a bug where my screen will begin rapidly flashing black/green, with random shapes or textures (The first two times it looked like a big ring, the third time like wavy lines, grass from the surrounding ground?) Tabbing out and back in results in a short screen hang but resolves the issue.

So far this issue only seems to occur when I am playing with my Thaumaturge class active- at least that's what I've been playing all three times it has happened.

I'm including a link to a Steam screencap I tried to grab during the latest incident, though it only caught a black frame. I'm also including a full DxDiag for support purposes.

Update: This issue has occured three more times today since making this post- greatly increasing the frequency of occurrence. The screen will flash white very rapidly, then return to normal.. lock for a second or two.. and then resume working fine, or go entirely black for a few seconds and return to normal. I've checked my drivers and they say they are up to date, my settings are all optimized. Not sure what I can do to resolve this issue but if it continues to become worse it will end up having me unsubbing before my paid time even begins. =(

I have gtx 960 and i get this issue when i overclock my gpu in this game, I haven't notice any flashing going without overclock but I'm not sure.

Thanks for the reply, Dark. My 960 is not overclocked- though the friend who did my build said that the 960 tends to overclock itself slightly if it's not being taxed. I'll have to see if there's a way to stop that, as maybe that is what causes this issue.

If you haven't done so already, go into your video driver settings and set things to application control for things like AA and AF. If the problem clears up, you may simply be dealing with more of the driver overriding the game engine crud we've seen before (a lot of people report issues going past 4x settings).

If it improves but doesn't go completely away, you may need to reduce some settings in the game's graphics options as well, or maybe notch back the clocks a bit on the video card---many are slightly overclocked against the reference design by default.

Thank you for the suggestion, Raist. I am not SUPER pc savvy myself. Would you be able to offer some insight on how one might go about testing that change? I'm not sure how to find the controls for my video settings that would allow me to designate running AA and AF through the program instead.

Right-Click a blank spot on your desktop and you should see an entry for the Nvidia Control Panel. Open that up and you should see several categories for 3D settings, Display Options, Video Playback, etc. In the 3D settings section you should have a link for managing 3D settings directly and another for adjusting settings with a preview. One will let you set things individually, and the other gives you preset options to choose from.

As for your clocks, you can look at the System information under the Help drop menu from that control panel. Note that the memory speed will be shown at it's GDDR effective rate, so you have to do a little math to see the actual clock rate. GDDR5 is "quad-pumped", so it runs at 4x the clock rate. So if it shows a memory rate of 3000, then it is clocked at 750 (750 X 4). Alternatively you could download a free copy of TechPowerUp's GPU-z. It will show you the default clock times, the boosted clock times, etc. and has a sensor page where you can monitor things like Temperature and GPU load and such. To adjust the clocks, you can also download the free version of MSI's AfterBurner. There are a lot of similar tools out there, but the interfaces for these are pretty simple and straightforward for the most part.

Oh yeah... the reference clocks for a GTX 960 were 1127Mhz core clock (1178 Boost) and 7GHz Effective GDDR5 memory rate (1750Mhz X 4).
(there is a typo at the nvidia site...they list it as 7.0 Gbps, but it is 7.0 Ghz).
