    Giving the character choices how to react is another, but it'll be an illusion of choice anyway, done simply for "immersion".
    Its funny that you've listed a better alternative, then pass it off as unimportant to storytelling. Story immersion is EXACTLY where the problem is. Their approach is showing a character that doesn't mesh with what we do on a regular basis. When we are a set piece, lugged around with no choice, it might not matter much in casual conversations, but in crucial scenes, and action scenes, it pulls us away, replacing our stalwart tank or powerful mage with someone that just doesn't fit. As it was mentioned before, its like there are two versions of our character, and the cutscene version is the incompetent one.

    In cutscenes and plot, keeping the viewer involved in the narrative becomes very important.
