I don't agree with the scripted to lose battles, especially when you've been established to be powerful for a good while. From a gameplay perspective, it feels like I'm wasting my time knowing I can't win, so it'd be fast for me to just throw the fight to get a move on.

Here's the thing though, the fight ended without result, so it could also be based off of damage taken, or received(or, as other rpgs do, throw in a special attack that reduces hp to a set amount and end the fight that way). Unless you've already spoiled yourself with walkthroughs or youtube videos, you wouldn't know if its scripted to coninue going in.
