Think of it this way: Our friends are willing to fight and die for us. They love us that much, and then some. The reason why we stand around and watch, I'm guessing, is because our friends wouldn't have it any other way.

Okay, I keep seeing this argument "they can't animate your character"
that's not true. The cutscene engine itself is using in-game assets. It's not a full CG render. So they wouldn't have to animate anything, it'd just be a series of IF statements.
IF job=SCH, use move pattern XYZ. Etc.
No, the reason they're not showing you a cool battle sequence between you and an NPC is exactly what Gilraen said - if they're going to have you fight, you're going to do it in control of your character.
There's really no comparison to be made there, though. The Yda/Livia sequence has set participants and only one animation is ever needed. The WoL can be any class and any race. Seriously, why would they make 13 cutscenes when they can make 1?
Man, I always forget to split SMN/SCH when I count 'em on the classes tab. -.-
I people wanted to see their character fight, SE should've made a instance fight where you fight them and if either side is about to lose the battle Thancred comes in and ends the fight with his cutscene. That way the warrior of light doesn't seem so weak one moment and too strong the next.
That's still lame reason because ffxiv may have a good story but your character doesn't feel like they are even part of the story at times.
I agree, that would've been a fun way to resolve it. I'm not saying it couldn't have been done a better way, but showing a cutscene of our characters fighting would just isn't really a reasonable thing to ask for. I suspect we'll fight with the WoD soon enough.I people wanted to see their character fight, SE should've made a instance fight where you fight them and if either side is about to lose the battle Thancred comes in and ends the fight with his cutscene. Then get an assortment of fruit and make variables, Casters with staffs fight one way, Books fight one way, swords fight one way (shields w/e) axes fight other ways, knives fight another, and dragoons. Just make a cutscene for all. alot of work, well it outta be. We wait forever for these things, some attention to character detail would be nice. Or they could just have us do some fancy foot work and fistfighting instead of just standing there like a lump like catching the axe between our finger tips giving us a prompt for a cool one liner like
"1. You messed with the wrong warrior of Light mofo" 2. Your gonna need that healer by the time I'm though with you" 3. Looks like your in....uh...I'm gonna beat you up -_-". There, script made :/
I suddenly got an image of the ((3.1 SPOILER INCOMING!))Warrior of Darkness betraying Elidibus. He swings his axe at Elidibus' robed neck, and Elidibus catches the edge of the blade between his finger and thumb.
Make it happen, that'd be pretty freaking awesome. I want an enemy like no other, someone beyond godlike.

some people got me wrong, i didnt wanted a full instance fight at that time !
but wanted seeing my character doing something else than just "standing" while everybody else got they're ass kicked !!
(if we follow that logic, if in real life your friend got they're ass kick like this in front of you, are you gonna stand still ? NO !)
and please dont give me the "yeah too much class wep, bla bla" its just skin ...,
set 1 animation and your good to go ...
(and most animation already exist in the database )
and for the "SE dont want to move your character for you"
O_o
there is already tons of quest and mission and CS, where you start point A and take back control in point B...
So you can block an axe with a book?
