It would just be 12; the game engine would handle the differences in jobs, races, and equipment.^ this right here. Also not to mention adding them to all 6 races.
6 races not to mention male and female genders so 12 in total.
12 x12= 24 separate cut scenes they'd have to make. So pretty much they decided it's much better to not do that and instead put the time and effort that it take do make 24 different cs into other stuff. Which is a good call.
While it be cool if our character did do something like fight in the cs its better to not waste time with it.
Ps. Not to mention they'd have to go back and add more once new jobs are in and if they ever add a new race.
The games engine may be able to handle it but they'd still need to adjust the jobs to every race cause remember people a Lala is smaller than a midlander last I checked it just look weired if they didn't adjust it.
Unless we want to go the old Batman series way and just put BLAM and KAPOW in it which would make it even more ridiculous.
In short its not worth taken the time to do this when they can put it towards more content.

Beat me to the punch. I was going to be much snarkier though.^ this right here. Also not to mention adding them to all 6 races.

I mean, seriously Imagine if they added us fighting at only the most obvious opportunities. The fight with the Sahagin, The fight with the Warriors of Darkness, and there is probably another I'm forgetting. Assume we get one every Expansion. Not even the updates. Assume that they just have us using skills and avoid actions that require them to make distinctions by race. Slashes and spells only. Heavensward means they need to go back and add three new fight animations to the Sahagin fight. Assume they add one new class next expansion and one new fight scene. They then need to add a new class scene to two different fights, as well as the thirteen animations ((Assume Scholar and Summoner are going to cast ruin and stuff to cut down on animation)) for the new fight. 5.0 they add one new class. Three new animations for the 2.X to 4.X fights and fourteen new fights.
Also, the hilarity of going to the storybook ((Why you can have a Darkknight in the 2.X cutscenes.)) to watch my Weaver toss her sewing pad about like a sword ((the game treats DoH and DoL classes as Gladiators for animations. S'why you thrust with a pickaxe.))

Because it's five races across 14 weapon types as well as varying heights they'd have to account for. It's not feasible from both a directing and animating (and armor-clipping) prospect.
It's one of the reasons XI focused around the heroines of their stories and not the adventurer, so they'd fill that role in for you rather than you feeling helpless as the chosen one.

The issue is that Square doesn't want to control your character. Not even to get you to Point B for the rest of the cutscene (though having you leave a house is fine...).
It's good they didnt fight right away IMO. Battles are better when there's a build up towards it. We know the battle is going to happen and the players want it to happen, so now there needs to be a reason for your character to want to face them. Then the payoff will be worth the hype (assuming it's done right).
Okay great. That's between two predetermined fighters. Predetermined race, predetermined class/job
Your character could potentially be 13 different classes. How are they supposed to orchestrate that? You're comparing apples to oranges

There's really no comparison to be made there, though. The Yda/Livia sequence has set participants and only one animation is ever needed. The WoL can be any class and any race. Seriously, why would they make 13 cutscenes when they can make 1?
Man, I always forget to split SMN/SCH when I count 'em on the classes tab. -.-

Then get an assortment of fruit and make variables, Casters with staffs fight one way, Books fight one way, swords fight one way (shields w/e) axes fight other ways, knives fight another, and dragoons. Just make a cutscene for all. alot of work, well it outta be. We wait forever for these things, some attention to character detail would be nice. Or they could just have us do some fancy foot work and fistfighting instead of just standing there like a lump like catching the axe between our finger tips giving us a prompt for a cool one liner like
"1. You messed with the wrong warrior of Light mofo" 2. Your gonna need that healer by the time I'm though with you" 3. Looks like your in....uh...I'm gonna beat you up -_-". There, script made :/
I suddenly got an image of the ((3.1 SPOILER INCOMING!))Warrior of Darkness betraying Elidibus. He swings his axe at Elidibus' robed neck, and Elidibus catches the edge of the blade between his finger and thumb.
Make it happen, that'd be pretty freaking awesome. I want an enemy like no other, someone beyond godlike.
