NO.
Unless they start doing a true horizontal progression gearing system this should not be done. And I'm talking about gear that will be useful for about 4 patches in the lest.
Crafters need something worthwhile to craft for the battle classes, right now we just have more crafter gear and Sky Pirate Gear used for spirit-bonding, and there are options available to obtain the Type V Materia for ONLY battle classes. I liked the old system where the gear was slightly weaker when fully melded.
I am making decent gil crafting Cassia Blocks since not many players are CRP speciality, gotta love that Mog Home![]()
The instant SE decided to make a farmable source for 210 gear, but crafting was stuck at 185 spiritbond gear only, they declared pretty darn loudly that crafting is irrelevant to them.
Crafting, at a minimum, should be green 190s, with materia slots. Alexander Normal can get you a complete set of gear in a day now if you put together a group to farm it. It's a non-issue to get 190s, other then needing to find people to farm with you. It's a minor issue to get 210s, because there's a lot of RNG there, but it's still not difficult.
I stopped believing the story about balancing raids a long time ago. I stopped believing the story about materia changes because tanks had to spend too much gil when I started thinking about it. Both have just enough truth to pass the first glance, but neither makes sense unless you also consider crafting to be not worth consideration. As for the "raid gear is special" ... 1 day to get full 190s. 1 day.
I'm predicting that 3.2 will give us crafted gear at least ilvl210, without materia slots. That would make crafted gear actual "catch-up" gear for raiding. I think it won't have any materia slots based on Sky Pirate gear not having any.

The i210 gear is randomized stats and randomized stat values. It can roll to be great, but so far most of it rolls to be crap. So in terms of bang for your buck, Alexander Savage is still the best place to get the top-end equipment. Just because it has i210 on the Mistbreak doesn't make it good.
Pretty sure they said this is what is going to happen in 3.2 along with being able to meld any piece of gear, not just gear with materia slots. I doubt it will be top tier ilvl, but I'm guessing it would be the equivalent to what ilvl200 is now.
