I've got the Snakebyte FFXIV controller off Amazon when I got XIV. It was NOT worth it.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, and I downloaded the drivers off there website (which says Windows 7 compatible). I built this PC a few months before ordering XIV. I never received a BSOD before I installed the drivers. After I got the game and controller on the same day, I got BSOD at least once every day. I was thinking it was XIV stressing my parts and causing overheating, so I spent $20 worth of fans for my case.

It didn't help, so thinking XIV was out of the question for me I took a two week break. I used the controller to play a few other games (Minecraft and Glitch, a browser MMO) and got BSOD on both of those games, which wouldn't stress my parts at all.

I figured out then it was the controller drivers, since it only happened when using the controller. I got me a 360 controller now, had it for 3 weeks. Never got a BSOD again (after getting them everyday while having the Snakebyte XIV controller) after I uninstalled the drivers (which left the controller useless).

There's no drivers to download with the Xbox controller either, it's plug and play for Windows 7. Got a sturdy feel to it and very responsive. It's only $30 off Newegg, tax and shipping included.

Any of these should work: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/713 including the wireless. I use a Logitech dual action one now, but I used a wireless one before as well, I just got tired of having to charge it.

I did not have to use any special software to map anything using either Logitech game pad, and I did not have to set anything different in the logitech software either. FFXIV Config tool saw it and I set/mapped all my buttons through FFXIV Config>Gamepad settings.

I cut off the end of an original Xbox controller, attached the corresponding wires to a USB cable and found some drivers.

+1 for a 360 controller. They are a little awkward at first if you've never used one, but if you're like me and have big hands there is no alternative.

I play this game with kb/mouse but for other games that's not so easy. In that case, I use a 360 controller.
