Linux Version of FFXIV

Was just wondering with Linux OS's becomming more popular for gaming thanks to Valve bringing there steam Client to the veriouse linux operating systems out there and the existence of a Mac OS version. Both of these operating systems are unix based code so would it be to much to ask if there are any plans to bring FFXIV to Linux?

I have been playing games on Debian and other Linux OS derivatives for some time now and enjoy the performance boost, the Linux community in general and the lack of hassle of having to install 3rd party apps like DirectX, Microsoft visual C++ and so on.

With the release of branded steam machines more and more games are set to be ported to work with them. Does Square Enix have any plans to port this game to Linux because frankly this is the only game that still ties me to having to use a Microsoft OS.

As for right now we are having to use Wine to run this game. It runs ok but not perfect and no doubt an official port would run way better and just think! it would be the first mainstream MMORPG that any one actually pays to run native on Linux.

Considering the mac version is also wine based(last I heard) what do you think an offcical port would look like? Probably same with wine only the commercial transgaming version(same as mac). I wouldn't mind it on Linux since only OS that I use along with various BSDs but I play on the PS4 so for me it wouldn't matter.

Your saying the Mac version isnt really a port and that it's basicly like a dosbox program but using wine? I had no idea i thought it was a real port.

Yeah sadly.

Well wine is not like dosbox. It's meant to be more of a compatibility layer that replaces some calls with some others. And there is a commercial version of it that gets used for certain game ports with support and such. But in the end it's still an extra layer. You can find the info easily. Maybe it will eventually change but that's the last info I know about it.

Thanks for the info very helpful. Have you yourself ran FFXIV using wine if so how was it?

Nope. Most of my machines are low spec and low power since I have them on 24/7. I prefer playing on the PS4 to not have to deal with graphics driver issues and such.

People seem to have a lot of workaarounds and things for it but that's really the best place to look if something would run.

I'd like it but I accept that I pretty much have to use Windows for gaming at this point. Most people use or are comfortable using Windows, so Linux is work without a lot of reward.
