I believe this fix was mainly aimed at reducing the amount of graphic spam from other players running around with the darkside effect on, not necessarily providing the owner the option to disable it. You can, but, yes, you're going to lose some other effects in the process. That's to be expected.

This was the proper change. There doesn't need to be a specific setting for the darkside graphic (if that were the case there should be a specific setting for every ability/spell effect in the game so I can choose exactly which I want and don't want to see). What needed to happen was that the darkside effects had to start obeying the same global battle effect settings that all other special effects were subject to. And that's what they (finally, months later) did.
