i hate to necro such an old thread but, i since i read through it, i've been itching to reply. for those of you who have brought up the poll, if the previous one gave viera an ' unfair advantage ' then why not just do another? i've spoken about this subject enough elsewhere: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...=1#post3410280
but, it's funny to see the naysayers saying the same things here while completely ignoring counterpoints that were raised before. it's totally fine for ffxiv to turn into a wow clone but it's just ' fanservice ' and ' pandering ' when existing fans of the series want more tie-ins to previously existing material. this argument truly is circular and endless. that's not going to stop me from trying to elaborate my own opinions again, however.
there are definitely more pressing issues with this game right now that have nothing to do with playable races, but at this point i wish there could just be an ivalice mmo. completely separate from ffxiv. xiv can be the wow clone that it apparently has to be in order to ' survive in the u.s. mmo market ' , and the rest of us who don't really find anything alluring ab that can play a final fantasy game instead. /sarcasm
it's not about ' bunny ears ', ' wanting to be cute / sexy ' , or ' having another pretty / feminine ' race but, i know no matter how much i elaborate on the ends and outs it will just be dismissed or ignored, just so someone can prop up their ego by looking cool on the internet when someone else bothers to make yet another viera thread.
for everyone saying ' just play the ivalice games! ' , i could just as easily counter that if you don't want to be a pretty bishounen / bishoujo dream or if you want to look more demonic and bestial, then go back to the games that you love to compare this one to so often. go back to wow.
i honestly wonder if this is some sort of cultural clash more than anything else. i'm tired of seeing the same people talk about ' innovation ' and ' something new ' when all they actually want is to ensure that the already homogeneous mmo demographic stays that way. certain groups are always at the top of the food chain. if you don't fit into this mold, you're automatically painted as irrational or demanding because you're going against ' the way things are always done '. and no, i am not saying. ' all mmo players are the same ' it's more along the lines of ' the most vocal ones seem to agree and share general ideas ( as well as a complete lack of aesthetic sense, if this thread is any indication ) ' .
your call for ' change ' isn't actually for the sake of ' trying new things' . it's completely dismissive to the preexisting fanbase who may have been attracted to this particular franchise for the same reasons that they may be repelled ( or disinterested ) in western titles in general. i'm playing this game because it's a final fantasy one. not because it's an mmo. a series that has been long known to have particular markers of aesthetics / appearance that happens to center around what some would consider ' feminine ' or ' too pretty '. if you're having a hard time dealing with this, i'm not sure what to say besides ' know your history '.
this is a japanese game and the wants of the west are not front and center. your expectations should be tempered accordingly. i've said it before but, one of the reasons i had difficulty establishing myself in other titles is that one demographic is almost unquestionably and specifically catered to in this market. this is a heavy assumption, yes, but you can get your wants met in pretty much any other game because said market is always targeting you. speaking for myself, i cannot. for me, that is the actual heart of all of this.
trying to pretend otherwise by throwing out yoshi p's opinion is dishonest. his argument is flimsy at best. all you have to do is see what happened to the au'ra for proof of this. why not just say what you actually mean: that you want ffxiv to cater to the general mmo crowd like so many others before it have done. don't pretend like you're concerned about the health of the game or ' diversity '. just admit that it's actually about you and everyone else like you that actually only cares about a genre doing exactly what they think it should do without any deviation because ' that's how it is in wow ' and other popular western mmos.
i also want to add that if anyone insists that viera are only sexual in nature then, you are purposely ignoring what has already been said by people that have played the titles featuring them and also letting your assumptions run wild based off of some weird fanart you came across on deviantart. some of the people i've had contact with in-game have no problem sexualizing lalafells or any other race so please make do with another strawman, because it's 2000% irrelevant. let's lump that in with ' they're exclusive to ivalice '. being able to regurgitate the final fantasy wiki is not impressive and we all know by now that this game has a million and one references to other things from other numbered ff's including the ones featuring ivalice.
& i guess if for some odd reason it isn't already clear, the answer is yes, i'd love for viera to be added in a future expansion. it doesn't necessarily have to be the next one. i'd really like the lack of mid-tier content as well as some particular class issues to addressed first, tbqh. if the devs do go the woodsprite route, great! nerd dreams fulfilled! if not, that's fine too. i'll be disappointed, but i'll probably still be around. i'm not going to pretend like it won't bother me a bit, tho, especially given the reasoning so far. if yoshi-p thinks that the votes were affected because of the mention of ' rabbits ', but there's all these threads talking ab why we can't play as them, then maybe that's an indication of fan want that he purposely isn't addressing.
& that's sort of sad.
