I'm curious about the Greystone thing as well (it really threw me for a loop when I saw it after waking up at 5am this morning and has been nagging me all through class).

I like the ASoFaI naming convention similarity idea, because if the name came from his mother, then that begs the question: why does it look so hyuran? Does Haurchefant harbor hyruan heritage that doesn't show AT ALL in his appearance? lol (I laugh but I would not put it past the devs)

And considering the racial divide which favors elezen in Ishgard, if they do give ll illegitimate children a generic last name (like in ASoFaI), I can see it making sense for the illegitimate-kid name to be of the hyuran convention.

Hopefully they'll explain the Greystone thing in the MSQ or through an NPC or something, it puzzled me as well.

I thought the same when I read the name, lol. But that there's really no hint for that, while it's quite visible on Hilda... Shouldn't there at least be something? Wouldn't that also mean that there could be much more half-breeds around than just her? It would have some interesting implications.

This is probable, I think. It's still quite sad he wasn't even allowed to really take on his family's surname...

(But hey, at least I wasn't mad for thinking 'this doesn't look like 'Fortemps' there, lol...)
But then, was he ever called Haurchefant Fortemps except by fans? I think he was allways described as the 'young lord(ling) of house Fortemps', so maybe that should have given us some hint earlier.

I am fairly certain that you're correct about that. As far as I can remember, no one ever refers to him with a surname in the game.

I recall several moments during our first visit to coerthas and a few other times when visiting haurchy he was referred to his subordinates as "lord Fortemps"

Though i could be imagining things. hard to think when you have dogsong stuck in your head.
