I hope they don't bring back Haurchefant in any form either. His death was well done, meaningful, and (brace yourself) in the grand scheme of things probably the best thing they could have done for his character.

Please don't kill me! Here's the thing: We aren't going to be in Ishgard forever. Eventually, we are going to move on. To other city states like Ala Mhigo, and possibly beyond Eorzea itself. Haurchefant was ultimately bound by his duties as a knight of Ishgard, and his post at Camp Dragonhead. If he had lived he would have inevitably slipped out of focus of the greater story once 3.x was done and the MSQ moved on from Ishgard. Aymeric, at least, now seems to be Ishgard's official representative in the Eorzean Alliance, which firmly establishes that he will continue to be relevant in the MSQ long after 3.x had ended. It would be very difficult to set up something similar for Haruchefant, and had he survived he would probably at best have token appearances here and there once we had left Ishgard.

Killing him off rather then submitting him to the inevitable decline in relevancy was the right thing to do for the story in the long run. It would be very awkward for a character like him to have persisted past the Ishgardian storyline, in the the 'we were such close friends and we hardly talk anymore why?' sort of way. And the writers played the death for all it was worth, and I will forever cite it as a storyline death done right.
