I've been thinking about the Red Mage gimmick since Dark Knight was released. There's no way a traditional Red Mage would work. The likely role I've been coming up with using variations of existing job mechanics is mid-line support dps-hybrid role based on an En-spell ability that works like a hybrid between Monks fists and Warriors wrath stack. With most of its offence abilities having an enfeebling effect (based on en-spell), to support itself solo and in a party. However between a triad of physical, magical, and defensive En-spells (Fire=Offence, Lightning = Magic, Water = Defense/Healing). The defensive one should be able to make the effect of physic a solid second place backup to Whm, Sch and Ast, when compared to Smn and Blm potency. At full stack strength somewhere just past cure strength from a White Mage. Again not the highest DPS, not the strongest mage, not as much dot as summoner and not a substiture for a healer (with more defense). But a decent backup/co-healer, enfeebler that can boost damage for other jobs. Either way I just haven't bothered to write everything down because it keeps looking like a cross between Red Mage and a classic Sword/Rune Mage. Due to the ideal stats (Int/Piety) and the fact mage shields are almost non existent. If I ever get to writing everything down in a logical manner I may post it but it wont work for traditionalists.
But with what others said, yeah it should use Raiper, Foils, Epee, Sabers and other thin blades that Gladiator/Paladin can use post lv 40. The Red Mage only blades should have a wand like aesthetic to them and get a bit more elegant at higher levels. However if it is not a special two handed weapon like daggers, the option to use defensive stat Targs, Bucklers, and other small round mage shields or offensive stat parrying blades. However if the idea to make Red Mage resemble a fencer the off hand is generally empty in the majority of modern fencing. However in historical fencing you still see small shields and parrying blades.
Edit:
Finally found a video discussion between a small shield vs dagger when pared to a sword. Pretty much situational or fight style.

in their offhand instead (replaces the appearance of one side of hand armor). RDM only coat sleeve things they use to receive attacks. Their gimmicks would be counter tanks where they would use their coat skills to receive attacks and reduce damage taken and then countering with the stored force ala sotn dracula fireballs
. They can also ignite their sword with various elements by swiping their swords against the magic storing coats. Lots of flourish, spins and twirls in their animations and their LB would be the silhouette of red coat wrapping the entire party or whatever.
