I would also recommend lancer prior to tanking if you want to take a DPS.
They have a hefty physical defense, must practice dodging and tanks such as warrior and dark knight play a LOT like lancer/dragoon does.

As mentioned, Lancer is the most tank-like of the DPS classes. But if you end up going with Warrior, you'll want Pugilist leveled for cross-class skills anyway, so that would be another reasonable choice. You could combine initially learning the dungeon mechanics with leveling your cross-class skills, then follow up with your main class.
(And there's nothing wrong with using Archer if you want to try something different. One of the nice things about this game is that you can try everything if you want. It just has less carryover to tanking than LNC or PUG.)
Early boss encounters are pretty straightforward. Some of them are as simple as "kill adds before they get to the center". If you hit a point where you're having trouble, try a new class for awhile. That's what I did with WHM and BRD, then I went back.
I have decided after playing for this week, that tanking won't be too hard to pick up.
I have a follow up question, what is the best server for an EU PS4 player? I would like to raid 2-3 nights a week and will be going tank (war/DRK)
If your FC is interested in a tank in training I can be contacted @banburybull on twitter

I do not play on the Chaos/EU data center, but Zodiark was the server that was created on that Data Center when the PS4 version launched so it likely has a high number of PS4 players. I've heard that it does not have a very large endgame community, but that is internet hearsay so take it as you will.
Thank you,
I have test characters on Phoenix, Odin and Ragnarok. All good servers
I would prefer to level with people to talk to and be social with (not be boosted)

For the PS4 I'd recommend getting a cheap usb keyboard for when you play in the Duty Finder. I use one myself with the PS4 and it helps a lot with communication (my free company is mixed PC and PS4 players). Since the duty finder is cross-server chances of getting a full console user party are rare.
EDIT:
In the meantime making macros for phrases like "/p Hello!" , "/p This is my first time here." or "/p This is my first time tanking this instance." and "/p Thank you for the party." will be helpful. In leveling dungeons most people are fairly patient with new players so long as the identify themselves. Otherwise when the new player bonus message pops up they may just assume you are an alt and already know what to do.

Thanks I got a spare keyboard knocking around
But I will make some macros for party chat when I make some tank macros

For PS4 controller, you have plenty of buttons. There are 8 sets of cross hotbars total. Pressing R1 switches between them to the next one you have actions set to. I only use 2 sets for combat (32 buttons total) because if you use more than 2, you would have to press R1 twice sometimes to reach a specific set, which causes a bigger delay between your actions. But by only having 2 sets for combat, you only have to press R1 once to get to any of the 2 sets you need since you are only using 2. Each set has 16 slots. 8 on left side and 8 on right side. The 8 on each side is mapped to the d-pad and face buttons of controller. Holding L2 brings up the left 8, and holding R2 brings up the right 8.
I have sets 4 through 8 filled with out of combat stuff such as buttons to instantly change class with a single press of said button, and numerous main commands, a mount, some emotes, etc. I have character configurations settings set so that when my weapon/tool is drawn only the sets I have as my combat sets will display and are the only ones that can be cycled between. While weapon/tool is sheathed, only sets 4 through 8 are active, which are my out of battle actions. I use sets 3 and 4 as combat sets for PVP, and I would go into character config when I wanted to do PVP and check boxes 3 and 4 while unchecking 1 and 2.
Thanks for all who have posted, I am now late 40s and loving tanking.
Still on controller, but may look at macros or moving to keyboard when raiding.
