I think 5 would be better. Tank, healer, melee dps, range dps, support.
Solo healing 4+1 guys instead of 2+1 who love aoe bathing would be a little bit too much for my taste.

5 would be ok, but not very flexible.
Personally I'd like to see them rebalance every 4 man for 6 and every 8 man for 12. And raids designed for 3 full parties would be rebalanced for 36.
Then for all the dungeon ques they should have two MISC slots, where you 4 people of X roles, and then 2 of whatever is available. So you might end up in a 6 man with 1 tank 1 healer and 4 dps, or on rare occasions 1 tank 2 dps and 3 healers.
Premades could go in with 6 paladins if they wanted to...
Making this change would allow SE to release classes that are support based. E.g. Red Mage. Right now square can only make tanks, healers, or DPS... There is no room to take something that is not a dps, not a healer, or not a tank.

I came here from XI myself and... I think 4 is plenty. 6 was a necessity in XI because of the nature of the game, if you needed someone other than the tank to sponge some damage you had the option in the other DDs. In this game combat is fast enough that that's not an issue. Most everything dies before the healer is too taxed or the tank drained to auto-attacks. The only reason to have more DDs is to trivialize the runs and, frankly, that's boring.
