FFXI Crossover Event

I really hope we get weapons, I'd love to see DRK get tenzen's phoenix blade.

FFXI will be doing a free event for returning players and a discount campaign for new players around the same time this is released to coincide with Iroha's story getting its conclusion. This is probably a way to get ffxiv players to want to go back/try it out.

If ever the time to check out XI it is definitely now. With the NPC party system and just how the game's underbelly has changed it's not nearly as much a monster as it was back then. And I say if you have no plans on getting its kin to be made for smartphones then go play it. A wonderful story, music, and experience that wasn't given its due recognition from so many just because of some more archaic mechanics and methods to the game.

I hope this event really goes all out and gets people to really give it a go.

Quick summary:

Vana'diel is reaching its final chapter on November 10th, "Star song of Vana'diel". For this occasion, we want to introduce the collab event "Strange tale of star song" starting November 11th. In this event, the character Iroha is coming to Eorzea. In FFXI, she cames from the future of destroyed Vana'diel in order to guide adventurers to resuce Vana'diel from unfortunate fate. This time Iroha is coming to Eorzea. What trials are waiting for her here? Rewards: Equipment Iroha is wearing.

I wouldn't expect too much from this event. I'm glad they're doing it - FFXI has a long and storied history, and it's nice to see it getting its props as it winds down to retirement - but the Rhapsodies story is clearly being done on a shoestring budget. Two of the three new zones added for Rhapsodies are literally greyscale versions of existing zones, for example, and one of the new Prime Avatars, Siren, is so clearly a modified Garuda model that even one of the in-game characters thinks it's Garuda at first blink. I wouldn't expect a whole lot of resources to be spent on the crossover event, either.

The writing for Rhapsodies is a bit weak, too; it's a little too obsessed with its lead character Iroha. She comes from a Bad Future where the world has been all but destroyed - but rather than work toward solving that problem, the player character seems to be spending all their time trying to figure out how to save Iroha. All the world-saving really seems to happen almost accidentally around us. We're seeking out powerful beings; Prime Avatars, Cait Sith, Gra'viton - and when we meet them, do we ask how to save the world? No! We ask how to keep Iroha alive - and then the villian coincidentally shows up and we confront them.

I also wasn't pleased with how they characterized some of the Prime Avatars. We meet with Odin and Alexander, for instance. The former has always been characterized with a near insatiable lust for battle. It's pretty much all he ever talks about, either encouraging people to do battle with him or empowering them to do battle on his behalf. The latter, while getting much less dialog prior to Rhapsodies, had a creepy cold, emotionless vibe to it, like an all-powerful god computer programmed to extract worship from its subjects by any means possible. In Rhapsodies, both entities have bland, normal conversations with the player, with the only hint of characterization being to sprinkle Thee's and Thou's into their speech.

Yeah I'm surprised that they didn't pick more iconic characters for a crossover to a game that's reached its finale... we should've gotten outfits for Aldo / Prishe / Lion / Lilisette / Luzaf

... I would kill for a Luzaf outfit, personally >__>

Pretty bummed the crossover is with a character I've never heard of. Bit of punch for people who played XI for 10 plus years and quit before these latest story inclusions. But, hey, at least they're doing the event. I'd be lying if I said I won't check it out.

aaand this event has me currently downloading FFXI <_< Never thought I'd go back to this game but seeing this event and reading up a bit on its story, kinda feels wrong to leave my "original" Sholin unfinished on XI. Well played SE x.x

I would've rather had weapon skins. That outfit looks hideous.
