No, it wasn't. Yoshida also said that the first step of the Anima weapon was going to be relatively easy and quick, to the point that he doesn't recommend people go out and farm the Zeta for the advantage. I'm 99% sure it won't be related to the Esoteric weapon as that can already be upgraded.

    From unofficial translation

New Relic is 3.15: Titled Anima Weapons
-First step will not be difficult
-Yoshi-P himself recommends not to go back and get Zeta and to instead just do the Anima Weapons themselves
-Zeta will have an advantage on the first step
-Advantages for Zeta will not be job-specific to what you completed the zeta on. If you have a BLM Zeta you may still gain an advantage on doing the Dark Knight weapon for example.

I read a comment where someone said he heard they say it would take around 10 hours to complete the first step. if that's true or not I dunno.

In FF11 the relic you had continued to upgrade wich means for example the Excalibur sword could go all the way to 99. Same Sword could continue to evolve and develope with you wich makes things more personal and fun and not making it feel like whatever effort you put into this item made it useless due to the next one. I should not be comparing games because FF11 and FF14 are two different games but it wouldn't have hurt SE to continue the same path on the relic
But, it took years to get your relic in XI, and then it was made obsolete.
I wasn't around for the most recent couple of years but I know that it was a bit of heartbreak.

I agree that our gear (tomestones) inspires little pride because it will get cycled out soon enough, but XI, like all MMOS had it's flaws too.

This isn't XI. It will never be XI. Anything you have to say about XI is irrelevant. Move on.

Actually, no. The relic in XI never became obsolete. Even now, with FFXI winding down to its conclusion, the relic weapons STILL are not obsolete. SE made sure to add (very grindy) quests to allow Relic-holders to continue to upgrade their relics to keep them ahead of the curve. Even now, a fully-upgraded Relic, Mythic, or Empyrion is a big step ahead of any other weapon of its type. In some cases, relics that USED to be of limited use to their job (like Claustrum, a BLM weapon with no useful BLM stats) are now packed with job-appropriate goodness.

I'm a bit puzzled about Gamer3427, though, as the odd thing is that Relics in this game ALSO evolve by way of grindy quests. The only difference is that instead of remaining the best weapons, they remain the second best weapons at each stage. Relics are pretty much the only bit of "horizontal progression" this game allows, and since Gamer seems to be a fan of Horizontal progression, it makes them an odd choice of targets for his ire.

They only did this after a huge outcry, though. Their original intent with the new expansion had been to obsolete everything prior (they wanted to move the game to a more modern and vertical system for gear).

    You should've just stopped there.

The relic quests in 2.X were almost always designed to keep content alive that otherwise would dry up.

Atma farming led to people running fates in zones that hadn't seen much in the way of fate parties. This was a boon to new players leveling up in that zone, as they would find more experienced players to team up with. None of the hot zones for fate running (south shroud, eastern la noscea, coethas, northern thanalan) were included in the atma grind.

Animus stage made players run specific dungeons. This meant that low level dungeons continued to have experienced level cap players supporting new players in their runs, while obsolete high level dungeons also continued to have ample people queuing up in duty finder.

Both the basic relic and the zodiac upgrade required some help from crafters, to keep that part of the game relevant as well.

So... What content is currently dead and in need of player support?

The new relic quest will probably be used to boost fate running in neglected 3.0 zones. Sea of Clouds, Dravanian Forelands, and Ays Lla all could use a boost in fate participation.

Crystal Tower could also use some love, but I fear that gating the relic weapon behind the 24 man raid isn't enough to keep CT alive. The number of people working on 3.0 relic will dry up some day, making a CT phase an impossible barrier in the future if a better solution isn't found.

Then you have to consider that crafting specialization hasn't worked the way SE wanted, and they've hinted at creating "specialization only recipes". Gating the relic questline behind this is essentially the same as gating it behind desnythesis (zodiac phase), because you can only choose 3 crafts to specialize in.

So... of the content that needs a participation boost sometime in the future, crafting is the only one I can picture players "preparing" for. Level crafting yourself, or become friends with people who have chosen a range of specializations.

The rest won't be added until 3.15, so we can only wait.
