The thing is, the crossover events that have been run in FFXIV so far have all had some deeper meta connection to Naoki Yoshida and weren't just 'fanservice crossover for the sake of fanservice'.

The FFXI event was run to coincide with FFXI's then eleventh anniversary of service, plus also FFXIV 1.0's development was originally headed by FFXI's original producer Hiromichi Tanaka, so the FFXI event was also a fond salute to Yoshi-P's predecessor (not to mention FFXIV was originally conceived to be the thematic successor to FFXI). Likewise, the Dragon Quest X event was similarly to coincide with DQX's first year of service, plus Yoshi-P was originally on the DQX development team before he took over FFXIV's development, so again that was a fond shoutout to his previous project. And finally the FFXIII event was actually the result of a joke at the E3 convention in 2013 between Yoshi-P and FFXIII's developers Motomu Toriyama and Tetusya Nomura - the later gave Lightning the FFXIV miqo'te racial gear and FFXIV Grand Company weapons in Lightning Returns and Yoshi famously stated that he would "find some way to repay the compliment" by "finding a way to have Lightning appear in FFXIV ARR." The FFXIII crossover event was the result (it was also officially cross-marketing with that game).

Thus these three events are actually exceptions rather than the rule - it's why SE are not running regular crossover events in FFXIV for every new game they release, it would just eat into development time that could be better spent elsewhere, plus overloading the game with fanservice crossover events just cheapens the experience all round - it would be as if SE were indirectly saying to players, "This game can't survive on it's own and thus we need to cram crossover events with other games to make it worth playing."

I love fanservice as much as the next FF fangirl, but a limit has to be drawn somewhere.
