I'd concentrate on levelling "hitting stuff with the pointy end". You can easily make more gil than you wil need just by doing some farming. All those crafters need mats and they pay well for them.

yes leveling Carpenter, Armorer and Leather Worker is one of the primary needed (Carpenter being the most primary)

These. You will get plenty of gil from leves and killing things. But if you DO craft I suggest these, so you can use the materia system when the time comes ^^

also lower level characters will love you for crafting and putting up lower level gear on the wards since it is usually in short supply and optimal level actually means a lot now.

I'm sort of mad that I lvled CRP first but thankfully Hart Guisarme is CRP based. ARM is definitely best first IMO.

Phaia (Penance) is such an easy mob though. As far as damage output goes, Penance might be the best. I'm not sure of any other belts that have +STR, and you can't slot offensive materia to a belt. The only reason to wear the newer stuff would be defensively right?

I haven't looked at the full list of gear to know if there's offensively better anything than Penance.
