Yeah, from a crafting standpoint, it was the 2-star weapons and armor (jewelry didn't come until later), which was crafted using Philosophy tome items. In general, it was about half the cost to buy the Darklight equipment than it was to buy the materials for the items (the exception was the crafted heavy armor, since it took up 2 slots but only used up 1 slot's worth of materials). This was eventually made cheaper by about half, but the Jewelry (which came out at that same time) was still expensive. Pretty much since the game came out, there's been a huge disconnect between crafted gear (and the hoops people go through to make it) and currency gear, with currency gear always being far more easily obtainable and crafted gear being so expensive (to justify the effort) that almost no one bought it.
