btw, i never played 1.0 but the fisher back then seems a bit more involved in the market and skills while fishing. and something spearfishing...

That's a very interesting post, despite it being from 2012, I see a lot of similar viewpoints there, too. Thanks for sharing!

How foolish, if I wanted to troll you and call you names, I would. We aren't at that stage yet.
I admire your effort on trying to make fishing as easy as, 1 2 and 3, cast hook and catch. Not on my watch. No way.
Out of your five points, only #4 and #5 have some merit. You are also the first person to publicly rant about #1 2 and 3, which is so left field that felt like you are the one trolling.

There is nothing worse than trying to catch some reducible fish on a limited timer... without Patience, you run the risk of not getting a HQ fish to mooch. With Patience on, your Precision/Powerful hookset never works when it's supposed to, even with great gear. With Botany and Mining, you can hit ephemeral nodes all day and rake in all the crystals and shards you could ever desire, but good luck getting Water & Ice crystals through fishing.
I do think Botany and Mining have the same RNG BS. Impulsive Appraisal is supposed to have a 30% chance of producing Discerning Eye and I think after hundreds of attempts, I would say it's closer to about 7-10%. You also get your collectability up to where you are set to make 2 gathering attempts - with 95% chance of a successful gather, it always seems like you miss one of your two attempts. But that's why we play the game, right? :-/
I agree, stinkpalmd. This is a good point I didn't touch base on. I've only done it a few times on FSH, but I've done BTN's gathering for emphereal nodes more. I didn't get many water/ice crystals or clusters compared to BTNs, but I've only done it a couple of times. I didn't feel qualified to give input =) Thanks for doing it for me!

I've caught every fish in the game. So here's my take:
1) Fishing in this game is hobby status. The reason fish take so long to gather is because 95% of them don't matter except as a little lore entry so it's no big deal if they simulate real life and make it take forever. The 5% that do matter are very common under the right conditions apart from Emperor Fish (which are farmable from other peoples' retainer ventures so nbd)
2) Again hobby status and right conditions. Being able to "choose" the fish is antithetical to the premise of fishing - you're just presenting a trojan horse not knowing what fish is going to be the idiot. This is unlike botany and mining where you see the tree and node and it's not going anywhere unless it's unspoiled 9_9
3) The only thing out of this list which is incredibly stupid is weather > weather. Caravan Eels were jerks when trying to farm Olgois but with Patience you have no excuse anymore. Not being able to 100% a Nepto Dragon is also fine because fish aren't dumb and you're still just using a little hook to reel in a 25-foot long monster.
4) Patience alone is better than every single new ability (and most old) they gave to BOT/MIN. Patience II is even better. Chum is fine, Yield+1/+2 skills take 4-5 RL minutes to generate. Now Fish Eyes? that can go to hell. Hooksets also work fine, you're just using them wrong - faint tug=precision, everything else=powerful. Of course precision is more costly because the majority of mooches start with tiny fish.
5) I have 5 types of bait on me for HW fish because the rest I can easily purchase from the housing ward NPCs. Even during the big fishing heyday I could get away with carrying a dozen types of bait and lures. Stop blaming the game and do your research so you can stop carrying useless stuff.
Personally, all I want out of fishing, everything else is nbd:
If they're going to make it the only source of reducible water/ice clusters I'd like the output per fish be increased to match the rate a MIN/BOT can gather. The windows for fish are smaller than the overall windows for MIN/BOT and most are mooch fish or need scrip bait for a decent bite rate.
1. time fishing is fine, you just relax and hit control whenever u heard fish bite. Its very relaxing this way.
2. Fish is rng.
3. Fishing is fine this way, just fishing isnt for you really.
You can have some good luck knowing how the fish tug and wich bait using by experience, it restricts over 80%-90% unwanted fish.
4. Yes using cordials is TOO op, you really get LOTS of wanted fish if you do it in proper way. Also, patience is not 100% hq is very greatly increased HQ.
5. If you hunting for a some few specific fish, you not need to keep all bait with you. Also if you are not training desynth or getting crystals, you better trash/sell those unwanted fish.
Chum is a waste gp skill.
If you want no waste time to get some fish (that not be untradable) then just buy it, 0% rng and 100% guaranteed u need
Your insights are excellent and I appreciate it. A couple of points: I do use precision for light, and powerful for heavy tugs. However, I have failed to get the fish on numerous occasions when I'm using them correctly. I will do more research on this and see if I'm doing it wrong, but I'm pretty sure I'm doing it right. It works a lot of the time, just not all the time.Hooksets also work fine, you're just using them wrong - faint tug=precision, everything else=powerful.

I think the "stop blaming the game and do your research" comment is a bit harsh and serious. I know where all the NPCs are to buy bait. And, nowhere did I say that I carry useless things. Please reread the post. I'm saying it would be beneficial to have a tacklebox to help unclutter inventory with our bait. Not all bait can be bought from a NPC. Other than this, I appreciate your post.
But I have fun doing it. The point of this is for discussion and ways to help improve a job I'm passionate about. I believe you missed the point of my post if this is your take-home message.

hm, i'm 100% fine with the fisher. made 30-40 mio since HW release alone with fish (and i don't fish for months, i'm in another grind now xD), that's more than enough for me :O
you can get some crafting mats from desynthesis, can reduce the fish for aether sand and clusterst and of course sell the fish and the pre 3.0 glamour stuff never gets old.
it's a huge huge timesink, yes, and the payout / hour is really bad. but i have fun, get my money and have something to do with my time xD
you can compare the fisher better with a battle class than another gatherer. the big fish are your raidbosses with final boss nepto dragon. and yeah, you can get some money with the fisher, like a battle class can farm monster drops. and like a battle class the fisher don't need or have another goal than getting all fish, like a battle class has the same goal with clearing all content.
but yeah, i like it to get some money with my fisher, in the end it IS a gatherer class.
