If you want a quick & dirty preview... try writing something, that is something substantial, for an embedded device. Raspberry Pi or any number of microcontrollers sold on sites for hobby robotics, etc. You run into the limitations of those fast and then you get to play the fun game of making hard choices and sacrifices.

Now... butt sliders, chubby sliders, horns as a separate option, all those other things people have asked for... Could SE do it? I'm almost certain they could, yes, but: What are you willing to cut to make it happen? To use your example: Muscle sliders (and facial hair for that matter). Not all races have those, but they get other customization options.

We got our party TP bars at the cost of seeing the party bonus in-frame... I don't think most people mind that (I definitely don't!), but they might not like giving up some other things. And as you noted, developer cost/time is also a factor.

Now all that being said, we have a phenomenal amount of customization compared to XI. 'Choose one head that also determines eye color, hair color, hair style, etc' and the body customization was a mere "small medium large" selector. When the PS5 or PS6 comes around and it's time for a new FF MMO, I bet we'll see another leap in customization.

Possibly even this MMO, when they drop PS3 support. But to really tell, we'd need the insight of a dev who knows exactly where the limitations are and what would be eased by dropping the platform.
