With how prolific botting already is, it's kind of sad to admit that this just "levels the playing field" more than anything. This is what happens when you release a game that's 99% about tedious grinding. Either put a CAPTCHA up every so often or redesign the system so it's more than just a mindless bottable/turboable/watchmoviesable grind.

A little broken, but then again FFXIV has tons of changes... I wouldnt be so surprised if closer to the PS3 Launch or when they start charging for the game. they do away with the ease of this. Remember this set up need not be permanent. I sorta agree with the above post about how being AFK is bad. but if you just dont wanna hit the x button. go right ahead theres plenty of Manga and Anime i could watch inbetween crafts

Don't get me wrong. I completely agree with you. Which is why I'm not going to waste away hours of my life doing something so tedious that it could make you go mental. I'd much prefer an intuitive, immersive crafting system. But it just simply does not exist.

I'm not really a fan of the "choose materials from the inventory until you get a workable combo and then grind at it for EXP" system AT ALL, but unfortunately, there isn't any other option to make crafting a legitimate class that is advanced by EXP.

    I think it's ridiculous.

I would much prefer to level a craft by taking part in long quests; visiting places and talking to people who would teach me techniques/abilities and recipes that I'd use to solve their problems and gain access to recipe books as a reward. There'd be no level this, rank that, success for this or that... etc.

You'd just quest your ass off in whatever direction you found most useful (or in all directions if you were a perfectionist) and when you wanted to make something you'd just open your recipe book, find the item, choose it, have the game do an inventory check to make sure you had the mats, and away you go.

There'd be recipe books full of usual stuff, and then individual hard-earned recipes you had to go out and find to gain access to.

Even the current synth process would be bearable if you only had to do it to make an item instead of grind bullsh!t gimme-recipes for exp.

But, I digress. It's impossible. The entire level system and repair mechanic would collapse.

UNLESS WE GOT RID OF GEAR DAMAGE, TOO! Oh, man....

Runescape had a captcha code required everytime you needed to recover from fatigue for a few months, then people made a program that streamed the captcha and displayed it to a chat room for hundreds of other players to try and type in first to get a good ratio of using and answering. Worked so well that jagex had to think of a new system lol.

That is epicly hilarious. Seriously though, SE should know by now, ESPECIALLY when working with MMOs, that you have to think like the player. And players will go to ridiculous ends in order to cheat a system. Which, again, leaves me to believe that they had to know people would be using turbo controllers. I mean, come ON!

or they could just have the type of quests your talking about give but loads of exp, and add certain recipes unlocked via quests, or maybe teirs unlocked by quests. Then you have either option

Agreed. They are as different as playing the game the way you want and playing it the way you are forced to. Here are your crafting options:

Normal Synthesis - pretty random, but reasonable chance of success.
Rapid Synthesis - poor chance of success, comparitively.
Careful Synthesis - abysmal chance of success.
Wait - Changes the chance of success, anywhere from tolerable to abysmal.

People don't spam Normal Synthesis because they're lazy - they do it because it's the best chance to finish a synth. Careful and Rapid are terrible methods unless you're sufficiently above the level of the recipe.. meaning it's no good for leveling. The difference in chance that Wait provides isn't enough to make up for the increasingly lowered durability, which gains no progress. That is, failing an attempt and losing maybe 10 or 12 durability gaining 10% progress is way better than waiting 3 times for the material to stabilize, losing 5 durability for no progress, particularly when your waiting still results in a failed attempt, losing even more durability for little progress.

The logical conclusion to all of this is just sit there and press Enter repeatedly. And really, what is the difference between that and botting, other than carpal tunnel?

Now, I don't bot, and I don't use this turbo controller method. But the controller method seems more and more attractive every time I have to distract myself from the frustratingly random results of actually trying to make real choices while crafting, and just Enter-spam.
