While I am not against high resolution textures, I think this game looks fine for the most part,
The only REALLY glaring issue I see is the texture Tiling (btw larger textures don't fix that... it just makes the quilt bigger)
Honestly the game doesn't look bad though, I don't know why this comes up.
The console complaints are getting annoying, they will drop support when they feel they need to.
Oi, there are many objects that can end up more expensive on triangle count than a character. While I'm not defending said flower pot, I wish this example would die.

that example will never die because Yoshi-P himself gave that example for the changes in models within the game.
the graphics engine adjustments however were made because the original graphics engine was unfinished at the time of FFXIV 1.0 release(this was according to both Yoshi-P and Tanaka) there was no way the original engine could support anything but the PC, not even the PS4 could have handled it. it was a mess
the textures were changed due to lower end PCs and the PS3.
I agree that we should have an option for higher end textures for PC but I have little doubt this would result in a huge download for anyone who used it.

The textures we have now are not even that small. I don't mind bigger textures of course, but it wouldnt change much. It's just the shaders are way simpler.
As for triangles, they are still influencing overall performance, the denser the mesh the harder it is to render, the flower pot was just an example of very poor optimisation. I mean for real physical models of flower petals instead of opacity map Is too much.
Yes, it is still influencing performance, that's why I said "cheaper in comparison".
You pretty much hit the nail on the head, it was an example of poor optimization, but now everyone looks to that as an example, as if that somehow gives them better understanding of how these things work, or as if THAT flower pot was the reason... lol...again I wish he would have just said "poorly optimized" which makes sense because the game didn't even seem like it was done. Optimization usually comes later.
How someone decided it was shipping in that state.... was a whole other issue, and in this case the LARGER issue. Point being, less on the guy that did the flower pot and more on who was driving the boat.
Honestly we shouldn't be looking to 1.0 when talking graphics anyway, it is in essence a totally different game and a failure game at that.

Tanaka was forced to release 1.0, he told them it wasn't ready but they insisted it was good enough. well all saw how well that went. didn't it result in the original CEO stepping down or something like that?

it was the the polygon count actually with the flower pot, they made the flower pot as realistic as they graphically could. it had the count of a player character.
Also name 1 game with realistic textures w/o any odd graphical layout. If you are looking for graphical iregularity you will see it.
also, the engine ff14 runs on is scaleable. where in ff14 1.0 they used the crystal tools engine. I didn't like animations from 1.0 running looked clunky with that sudden stop, if you walk 2 inches ur character looked like it was limping.
Without odd graphical layout, what's that supposed to mean? If you mean that all textures are perfect, there are none, but that's not what people are asking for. We're just asking for something that didn't look like someone smeared paint onto something, that's not a texture, that's a mess. Sometimes I can literally see the pixels in the texture. But if you want me to list some games that have great textures where it counts, Grand Theft Auto V, Witcher 3, Metro Last Light, Killing Floor 2, etc. There's more than plenty.

Quite, the lalafell asked how the PS3 version doesn't play properly. Until May or so of this year I played on the PS3 and was able to run any content at the time, even farmed Coil for a bit (as much as one can without beating Twintania, anyway). 'People' wave graphics around like they are the end-all be-all of a game but some of us just don't care. My all time favorite games are from consoles that were old when some of you were toddling about. You know, when game graphics were measured in bits. I still play some of them. So I have to parrot the lalafell's question, cause all you've done is belittle them for not thinking like you and sidestepped the question altogether.
