    The whole idea of a more elegant tank is kinda growing on me, using RDM as a base what if they did it like this...

    Weapon instead of a regular rapier how about a dual aspect weapon similar to NiN and MNK with one side being the sword, the other a small buckler similar to Scottish weaponry.

    And what if the stance switching could be done as the En-elemental style?

    Ex- tank stance could be Enfire giving a passive boost to enmity and defence and a penalty to dmg and adding cast times to certain skills.

    Ex dps stance could be En-thunder unlocking certain AoE skills and increasing base dmg by 20%

    Ex tank oh s**t button En-Aqua adds buff fluidity for 15 sec increasing parry rate. Unlocks skill (let\\'s call it elegance) where the next 2 physical hits are dodged with a penalty afterwards.

    Finally giving an ability that let\\'s you switch your Auto attacks from doing physical dmg to doing magical damage giving credence to the whole Spell blade theme

    As far as I love the idea of a Red Mage tank, I don't think we'll see a new sword tank anytime soon. They should release some sword DPS jobs. Unless they're planning to implement the talent tree system in 4.0, then we could see SAM having a tank and a DPS tree, RDM having tank, DPS and healer, DRK and WAR having tank and DPS too etc...

    That's unlikely to happen, but they hinted we'd be getting SAM then, so there's your sword using DPS.

    We never know, Yoshi said that he was interested in implementing talent trees and jobs with multiple roles in the future. Considering that RDM is hinted for 4.0 and the fact that it has always been that super versatile job in every FF games, it could be a good expansion to implement talent trees. And since they also hinted SAM which is still debated about "should it be a tank or a DPS ?" for the exact same expac... I don't think it's that unlikely to happen. Don't forget that 4.0 will most likely bring a lot of new things to the game since they'll drop the PS3 version. We never know.

    I think RDM could be pretty interesting with BLM-like and WHM-like stuff and adding a sword. Maybe two? Maybe some other kind of weapon all together since swords are kinda covered in PLD/DRK/NIN/SAM.

    From BLM you draw your main combat stuff like Umbral Ice and Astral Fire as En-spell type stuff, which could be defensive and offensive stances, some lightning elemental damage stuff. Then WHM offers some self-heal kind of things and damage mitigation.
    Where DRK cribs the Paladin with Shadown Skin/wall (Rampart/Sentinel) - cooldown-based big mitigation, the RDM would crib WAR with maybe one push button Vengeance equivalent and then something that works from charges built up like Inner Beast. A type of stoneskin thing would be similar to Thrill of Battle.
    That's just the basics, so that it behaves within the current game. After that you've got some mana usage in DPS and maybe some kind of cyclical stance thing.

    As a weird thing though,you'd probably not get to cross class WHM or BLM, they don't really give much useful anyway.

    Been thinking of some class mechanics. One that would be a must (for the idea of tanking red mage to me) would be after parry or a skill activation, youd get a timed buff that would guarentee an instant 100% parry with a counterattack graphic. Say you parry and then activate the skill and the next incoming attack you see the red mage parry the attack (with their off hand or main hand) do a finesse move turn the counterattack weapon facing down and gesture aim and BLAMO a magical attack at the enemy (could be damage, hp siphon, or a single./aoe blind effect)

    Bump with a new mechanic idea.

    A skill that either parrys a % of one large attack to hit mobs in that area instead of you or a set amount fo time where you parry a % of damage and the enemy gets a debuff that means they take more damage from all otehr players (because they have been set off balance to say). This would add an interesting 'dps' factor to tanks. ex use this ability to parry a HUGE attack to give an extended or increased debuff to the mob. Use it at the wrong time and you get little bonus, use it at the right time and BLAMO huge bonus (aka fight saving boone).
