In the response it said you can buy materia with exploration points. Don't see the problem here. It's gonna be sweet.

people asking gear progressing and they deliver, you can desynth or convert the previous gear to materia so it can enchance your next gear
people asking for horizontal progressing and choice of gearing, they deliver with materia system of choice
people asking materia to be relevant again in gear, and they deliver.
now people complaining about materia will be relevant again.
you just want to buy a NPC gear and be top of the line?
you just want to exploring and doing one side of the game to be the best in whole game?
logic
and its not like everyone except you will have a normal IV meld/light overmeld, why so afraid you will be judged and kicked from party if whole party is not even full overmeld IV.

It's like 1 materia..that will hardly make very little if at all any difference, pretty much forcing a Tier V which will likely sky rocket in the already absurd price it is now.

It has the absurd price it has now because we can't convert affordable stuff for V tier. Trying to use i180 combat gear to make tier V would be stupid because the gear is worth more than the best tier V you could get, due to the absurd price of red scrip mats. Exploratory will change that with easier to get tier V from spiritbonding the exploratory gear, maybe easier to get red scrips too. Right now there is no supply and no real demand.
In the future there'll be a high supply and a medium demand (mainly from crafters, not the tome people - crafters will pentameld the crafter combat gear, if its affordable gear).

I wouldn't mind the changes so much, if they actually removed some of the RNG from spirit bonding. Nothing more enjoyable than spending 2 hours SB'ing gear, only to convert it and get nothing but elemental materia, go to mutamix to try to change it, and get more elemental materia.
Of course if they did this, then I suppose people who rely on materia for gil, would cry bloody murder, since it'd be so much easier to get specific materia you wanted.

I thought one recurring complaint was lack of attention to the materia system because it couldn't be used on the best gear. Now SE gives us the ability to put it on the best gear and people complain. I'm surprised Yoshi-P can maintain such a magnificent head of hair. If I were in his position the constant stress from all the rampant moving of the goalpost by players would have caused me to go bald ages ago.
With this character's death, the thread of prophecy remains intact.
What proof do you have that it's the same people? I would beg to differ on that and I would wager most people would not hold two contradictory views on a specific topic.I thought one recurring complaint was lack of attention to the materia system because it couldn't be used on the best gear. With gear approaching 220, each piece of equipment may have about 100 accuracy. Since they are not going to scrap this outdated idea, the melds help for us to be able to maximize stats and wear gear, IE = you need to meet accuracy cap meaning pieces are not interchangeable, this lets that happen
People want customization and when SE delivers they complain? LOL. I'm GLAD this is coming man i've been waiting for this forever melding/gemming my equipment as I see fit? Hell yeah. It also creates an actual purpose with the new crafted accessories and gear that crafters made because we never ever used materia unless you did Novus or pentamelded which costs an arm and a leg.
Regarding bringing the person who bothered to meld their gear, yeah i'd bring them over someone who wasn't why?
1) they actually took the time to optimize their class
2) push themselves to their fullest potential
It's like any other MMO you take someone who's geared, is prepared, and you raid with them to me it's just how I play my MMOs, gil will actually have a purpose instead of just sitting in my inventory rotting away.
