    Job Names/Uniqueness

As an avid Final Fantasy XIV and a past Final Fantasy XI player, I feel that the issue about upcoming the jobs should be voiced vehemently. Here's the issue with the revamped job names, the jobs just simply do not fit into the game when compared to the latter; let's compare the updated job titles that were changed. This game went from Arcanist, Fencer, Assassin, Musketeer, to White Mage, Black Mage, Paladin, Monk, Bard, Warrior. The latter jobs are a perfect match for the world of Eorzea. FFXIV is a new franchise and NOT a revamp of FFXI, which seems to be the source of the biased feedback from the community. The feel of the world, game play, and lore shows us that FFXIV is a modern MMO and seeks to portray this game for more of a "realistic" genre. This is a FF addition and we see the use of magic, materia and FF lore, but XIV wants to put one foot slightly out of the FF bound. Playing XIV feels as though the developers want the game to be more realistic, based on the crafting, game play, etc., so please let the developers turn XIV into a great new franchise. The current feedback given by the players is swaying the team into another "FFXI-2" scheme, something which I see as a failure if it succeeds to be so. All in all, I wish the developers would not give in to the Final Fantasy fan boy feedback, and stick to doing what they do best, create wonderful video games.

Maybe its what the players are suggesting, but what the devs do with the game is strictly their own choice, and they may come with a few twists to render the game very diverse, especially when compared to FFXI. Yoshida said it himself, he will not let the game become close to being compared with FFXI.

I don't think the developers will take FFXIV too far towards FFXI; I think they understand that the FFXI diehards are a minority of the potential player base, and that generating new customers means they should be avoiding the things that turned so many Final Fantasy fans away from FFXI.

I don't think having traditional names for classes that Final Fantasy fans adore is something that is negative for the game, but they do need to ensure that each class and job has interesting play mechanics, and right now I think that's one of the biggest challenges the game faces. The classes play very similar to each other and don't really rely on unique mechanics, and that's something that will hurt the game.

One way the FFXIV class system has hurt the game is because it's really hard to have identity within the class. Most people struggle associating with a thaumaturge. My initial impressions of Conjurer would be they would be "conjuring" things. Basic things like that make it hard to associate with the classes. Had the game been released completed, "What is an Arcanist?"

They're not easily answered questions, and I know I'll always feel like this isn't quite a Final Fantasy game until a Summoner class is somehow involved - although right now game lore makes that challenging.

With the job system hopefully less than half a year away, I remain skeptical about it because we know so few details about how its going to work. I think there's a significant chance for the system to be lack luster.

The job names are classic Final Fantasy. The XI team didn't invent them.

There are certain things one expects when playing any Final Fantasy. Moogles, chocobos, classic job names and some guy named Cid. It like if Capcom made a Mega Man MMO and there's no mention of Mega Man or Dr. Light. It's just one of those series dipped in tradition. That's why it has such feverish fans.

There's nothing more "realistic" about calling a person with a sword and shield a gladiator as opposed to a paladin. Both were at one point in history "real."

And realism is a weak position for arguing anything in a game with dragons and magic and such.

I think you meant to say "former" rather than "latter" as the way it is now contradicts your point.

    ^ This.

Why do some people think jobs originated from FFXI lol. Jobs are almost a staple to the FF name along with other familial things like airships, monsters, etc. It's just not a FF game without some familiar stuff from the franchise. I rather have the name "Black Mage" over "Thaumaturge" any day. You know you thought WTF when you saw that class name...
