I don't think the developers will take FFXIV too far towards FFXI; I think they understand that the FFXI diehards are a minority of the potential player base, and that generating new customers means they should be avoiding the things that turned so many Final Fantasy fans away from FFXI.

I don't think having traditional names for classes that Final Fantasy fans adore is something that is negative for the game, but they do need to ensure that each class and job has interesting play mechanics, and right now I think that's one of the biggest challenges the game faces. The classes play very similar to each other and don't really rely on unique mechanics, and that's something that will hurt the game.

One way the FFXIV class system has hurt the game is because it's really hard to have identity within the class. Most people struggle associating with a thaumaturge. My initial impressions of Conjurer would be they would be "conjuring" things. Basic things like that make it hard to associate with the classes. Had the game been released completed, "What is an Arcanist?"

They're not easily answered questions, and I know I'll always feel like this isn't quite a Final Fantasy game until a Summoner class is somehow involved - although right now game lore makes that challenging.

With the job system hopefully less than half a year away, I remain skeptical about it because we know so few details about how its going to work. I think there's a significant chance for the system to be lack luster.
