Crafting my Gemmaster's Mallet. Got to 98% quality, went for it and....
NQ mallet.
So now what do i do with it? Anyone out there want a Gemmaster's Mallet to desynth? I do not have BSM desynth...
sigh...
I am another Ultros crafter BTW.

Sorry to here. Hate to sound negative all the time but yea. Even Quick Synth will burp out an HQ every 14 or so crafts. Iit's called fail farm 14 for a reason I suppose.

Oh i know, them's the breaks! For every one like this there are the ones where you know it is just going to blow up and then you get an excellent on your Byregot's. I am not complaining, just venting. And i was serious... Anyone on Ultros want a NQ Gemmaster's mallet? Otherwise i will put it on the MB and hope to recoup some of the loss....
Well you could use it to help your crafts too and possibly SB it and then convert it when they unlock T5 materia.I am on Utlros and will be making my own OHs pretty soon, I hope your next craft is successful!
my next one was successful. I have my Gemmaster's mallet HQ. Thank you!
I would have put my keyboard through my monitor if that happened. The opportunity cost of 2-star crafts (especially the 3 and 4 scrip mat ones) is just too high to leave up to SE's shitty rng roulette of a crafting system. 98% HQ should give you an item with 98% of the stats HQ items currently give you, not a 2% chance to get a completely worthless item. I quit crafting because of how stressful the 2-star stuff is right now.
My suggestion to you is pentameld it with some junk materia and find someone with maxed out dBSM to desynth it for you to try and get a few of the ingots back.

Disagree on all points. Of the two dozen or so or so 2-star L60 crafts my wife and I have done, we have had two NQ:I would have put my keyboard through my monitor if that happened. One (an Astral Birch Ring, still for sale on Faerie for 1 million gil) was NQ because I miscalculated during the crafting, so I was a little annoyed at myself -- if I had tried out the change I made mid-craft using the FFXIV Crafting Optimizer (my standard practice when adapting a recipe to G/E conditions and/or fails ever since) I would have not done it, and the ring would probably have been HQ.
The other (a Hidemaster's Apron) we failed a 98% chance to HQ. And worse, we had decided to not use an HQ Aethersand in the craft, of which we had several, because we thought we had plenty of starting quality -- we would have had a 100% chance at HQ if we had used one HQ Aethersand. But I didn't get upset at all. The apron looks very cute on my character (that's half the reason I made it to be honest), and as melded is a slight upgrade, so I'm OK with it. Some day it will hopefully yield a Grade V materia, and I'll make another one.
FFXIV Crafting involves skill and chance, much like poker. The risks are part of the fun of both games. If you can't enjoy the game regardless of whether your luck is running hot or cold, then perhaps neither poker nor FFXIV crafting is for you.

Did you miss the part of my post where I said I quit crafting for exactly this reason? And don't kid yourself, FFXIV crafting requires almost no skill. You follow one of a handful of set rotations, and pray that statistical probability doesn't stab you in the heart. I've done my own fair share of 2-star crafts, and while none of the finished products have come out NQ, the stress of knowing that sooner or later I will NQ something through no fault of my own has sucked all the fun out of "progression" crafting for me. NQ items are a failure state right now and they absolutely shouldn't be. The only failure state should be a botched synth.
I agree that NQs should be made a bit more useful (especially if you need all HQ to meet the requirements for the next set of items; if not, NQs might still be useable as they do have higher stat caps than i150s), but risk is what makes it a bit interesting. It also allows for differentiation between players since better skilled crafters will have higher HQ yields. Current end game crafts have been intentionally designed to be very easy to HQ, so I believe that crafting would have to be made MUCH harder if they were to remove most of the RNG elements, otherwise everyone would have 100% HQ yields as soon as they study a guide. Unless a form of real-time system is introduced, I don't think RNG can be completely removed either since it'll probably still be required to determine what obstacles a crafter would face (this would lead to discontent over RNG throwing situations with unequal difficulty, etc). You follow one of a handful of set rotations, and pray that statistical probability doesn't stab you in the heart. Also, remember that if you use a less rigid strategy, you do have the ability to increase your statistical probabilities of an HQ as the craft progresses. 2* crafts are unfortunately gated, but if your strategies are effective, NQs should be very rare.

I did the exact same thing! I did not use a HQ sand when I could have on the craft and it just went south on me. So far I have done all the accessories and all the off hands and half the main hands and this is the first 'failed' i.e NQ one.
