No publisher is stupid enough to think twice about publishing to Australia, while we have a rather small population we have a healthy gaming community, they're also given a free pass to overcharge us for whatever reason. iiNet is known for being generous when it comes to hosting, SWTOR was offered hosting for "almost free" in terms of server hosting from what I've been told for a few months, the servers were ultimately shut down due to lack of activity though. FFXIV has a much larger Australian/Oceanic community than SWTOR. HiRez studios, SOE/Daybreak, Blizzard, Jagex, and others all have Australian servers, some of those studios are far smaller and make far less money than FFXIV. The problem lies in SE's lack of unwillingness to invest money on it when they're already getting away with what they have, 2 years to implement EU servers? I'm sorry, but that's pathetic. Most MMOs have that at launch. That's not to mention that the servers don't even have to be located in Australia, Singapore/New Zealand would both work.

Let's say FFXIV has 1 million players, and 5% of those are Oceanic/SEA, that's $600,000 a month with $12 a month subscriptions, that's not including game sales from those regions, Mogstation purchases (of which I've personally spent quite a bit), and services like name changes, server transfers, retainers you name it. More than safe enough to round it up to $700,000-$800,000 a month. If you're honestly telling me that they can't spare the money for severs located in Singapore, Australia, where have you, then I don't know what to say to you. As for dead servers, I don't think they'll be dead to begin with if they launch only a few servers, but WoW has implemented cross-region technology allowing Oceanic players to play with NA players through their version of the Duty Finder if there aren't enough Australian players, and vice versa. Seeing as WoW developers seem to be far more skilled than SE at server related issues, I'm not sure if SE could manage this, but it's an idea.

No, the unofficial AU server is Tonberry on Elemental. I hear Masamune on Mana has a healthy Australian community, but I'm not 100% certain on that one.
