Is it because NZ and AUS are part of the EU?
Seriously asking if they're considered part of it, I'm not sure. That's the only reason I could think of to be honest.

In terms of games though: yes, they are.

There are 3 major regions for video games, which are Asia (except for China), NA and PAL (Europe, Australia and NZ). Region lock from consoles works with these regions, so I assume Australian players got recommendations to join EU servers based on that concept.
